A generous helping of alliteration with a side of swear words.

Dame Judi Dench has a little something to say about one of her latest film roles and it isn’t terribly complimentary — especially for the costume department. As fans of the musical film genre will no doubt recall, Dench had one of the central roles as Old Deuteronomy in 2019’s adaptation of the much-loved 1980’s musical Cats. The movie version ended up being… less-loved. Despite an all-star cast (Dench, plus Taylor Swift, Ian McKellen, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Hudson, and more) Cats was derided for its sloppy CGI, its nonsensical scaling, and its outright weird-but-not-in-a-good-way-ness.And while the movie has become a bit of a cult hit (as a ‘might as well watch this while we’re all stuck inside for the duration of this pandemic’ kind of thing), its star definitely isn’t a fan of the way she ended up looking on screen. “A battered, mangy old cat,” said Dench, describing her character’s appearance in an interview that accompanies her record-breaking Vogue cover. “A great big orange bruiser. What’s that about?”The actor, who at 85 is the oldest woman to ever be featured on the cover of the world’s most iconic fashion magazine, had harsh words for what she refers to “the cloak I was made to wear” (is it impossible to imagine making Judi Dench do anything or is it just us?). “Like five foxes f**king on my back,” said Dench, who seemed only somewhat soothed by a flattering text message she received from actor Ben Whishaw, who “just doted on [her performance].”But while Dench is willing to dish a little about her feline flop, her focus right now is on everyone staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. “What is a good thing is that it has made people aware of the predicament of others who are completely alone,” she told Vogue. “If a great deal of kindness comes out of this, then that will be a plus.”Dench recently took over her daughter Finty Williams’ Twitter account to share a sweet message of support with fans while we’re all making our way through this lockdown. In light of her Cats critique, the choice of what basically amounts to an anti-cat costume is even more amusing.
