It seems 2019 Golden Globe-nominee Elsie Fisher had the same reaction as a lot of us Monday morning when the 2020 Academy Award nominees were announced by Issa Rae and John Cho. After years of receiving criticism over the lack of diversity in their picks, you might think 2020 would be the year the Academy finally chooses to highlight women and people of colour. Well, nope. Not this year. Most glaringly: Cynthia Erivo is the only acting nominee of colour—snubbing Jennifer Lopez's
Hustlers performance and Awkwafina's Golden Globe-winning acting in
The Farewell—and the directing category is entirely male (Greta Gerwig? Lulu Wang?). In the day since
the noms came out, Twitter and the wider internet have been aflutter with criticism for
the snubs. To rectify the situation as best she could, Elsie Fisher joined the online fray to announce her own nominations for the inaugural Elsie Awards—honouring excellence in film according to Elsie Fisher, specifically. Hey, should we do
eTalk awards? Hmmm...
Elsie's picks overlap with the Academy's very little and are far more diverse. She gives
Hustlers its due, including nominations for Constance Wu and director Lorene Scafaria.
The Farewell's star Awkwfina and director Lulu Wang get recognition as does Lupita Nyong'o and Jordan Peele for
Us. Ana de Armas also gets a shout-out for her incredible performance in
Knives Out.To highlight even more brilliant movies, Elsie also did a genre breakdown for best feature—adding categories for
Best Independent Feature (
Booksmart,
Honey Boy,
The Art of Self Defence,
The Lighthouse) and
Best Horror Feature (
Ready or Not,
Us,
Climax,
Midsommar). She also added a
Best Young Performer category where she honoured Roman Griffin Davis (
Jojo Rabbit), Julia Butters (
Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood), Shahadi Wright Joseph (
Us) and Noah Jupe (
Honey Boy). If anyone knows the importance of highlighting young talent, it's Elsie.
Elsie concluded by informing the public that the winners will be shared at 9 p.m. PST Tuesday on Twitter by her as well as filmmaker Clementine Narcisse. We know we'll certainly be tuning in for the results.
