On any given day, the Marvel Universe has a lot going on – but especially when an in-the-know star lets a delicious detail slip about an upcoming movie. Which, it seems, is exactly what Natalie Portman did in a recent interview, and the fan frenzy has already begun. Portman portrayed Dr. Jane Foster in the first two Thor films, and according to her recent interview with Fatherly, Jane will play a big role in the upcoming instalment, Thor: Love and Thunder, written and director by Taika Waititi.
Natalie says the upcoming film will be based on the comic Mighty Thor, and will follow Dr. Foster through a health battle as she steps into her superheroine powers. "She's going through cancer treatment and is a superhero on the side," Natalie tells Fatherly.
Fans likely recall that, in the original Stan Lee comic, Dr. Jane Foster worked as a nurse under Dr. Donald Blake (who was coincidently Thor’s human identity) before becoming a doctor herself. While working together, Dr. Blake fell in love with Dr. Foster who, at the time, was unaware of his secret, other-worldly identity. However, Dr. Foster was infatuated with Thor and his epic abilities, which leaves Dr. Blake to wonder if she could ever love a "normal" man like him. Later on, Dr. Foster is "deemed worthy to wield Thor’s hammer when the former is no longer able" and, with her newly minted godly powers making her the Goddess of Thunder, she joins the Avengers.
For Thor: Love and Thunder, it looks like the tale will pick up further down Dr. Foster’s timeline, as she discovers she has cancer. This is also around the time her husband and child die in a car accident (long after her romance with Thor), but it has not yet been confirmed if that personal loss will be apart of her story for this film.

Back in February, the director told Variety that they were “still figuring out” major plot points about the upcoming Thor.
When specifically asked whether Thor: Love and Thunder would explore Dr. Foster’s battle with cancer, he replied, "We don't know. That comics run was a big inspiration, and was an influence on the first few drafts. But at Marvel, we always change everything."Beyond spilling tea, Portman is currently in Australia prepping for the role which, reportedly, has her training in Marvel-esq fashion. You know how it goes, big hammer, big muscles. See you on the big screen soon, Dr. Foster.
