There are two kinds of people in this world: those who love Alicia Silverstone and those who are dead wrong. She is a treasure and a delight in every film she graces, from her iconic role as Cher in Clueless, to Blast From The Past, Excess Baggage, The Crush, and even all those Aerosmith music videos (her fierceness in Cryin’ is our 2020 mood). But in a new interview with The Guardian, Alicia opened up about her role as Batgirl in the critically-panned Batman & Robin, co-starring George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell as the respective caped crusader and his sidekick. According to Silverstone, she was body-shamed by the press which caused her to take a step back from the acting world.Silverstone told The Guardian that the tabloids and paparazzi that chased her through Hollywood dubbed her “Fatgirl” and there was endless ink spilled on her weight, chest size and body shape, rather than her acting ability or talent, something that caused her to re-evaluate her desire to work in the industry.“They would make fun of my body when I was younger,” she told the publication. “It was hurtful but I knew they were wrong. I wasn’t confused. I knew that it was not right to make fun of someone’s body shape, that doesn’t seem like the right thing to be doing to a human.” She goes on to say that a journalist even once had the audacity to ask what her bra size was. Raise your hand if you feel like having a sternly-worded chat with that journalist.Today, she still has problems with the way she was treated on that set (“There were working circumstances that were less than favourable in terms of how things went down”), and that led to her taking a very real step back from acting to focus more on her animal rights activism and promoting a plant-based diet. “I stopped loving acting for a very long time . . . My body was just like, this is what I’m meant to do, I love it so much, I need to find a way to do both, to be able to be an actress and be an activist at the same time so that’s what I did.”Since that decision, she’s gone au-naturelle for PETA campaigns, her Instagram channel is full of vegan recipes and eco-living tips and she even published a vegan cookbook in 2011 called The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing and Saving the Planet.

Luckily, our favourite '90s gal with a heart of gold has since returned to acting, and says she "really love[d] those weird movies" like Yorgos Lanthimos' 2017 flick The Killing of a Sacred Deer and 2019 horror film The Lodge, in which she had small roles. She can now be seen in the new indie comedy Bad Therapy about a couple who seeks relationship help from a therapist who ends up being manipulative. When asked if she'd be interested in a Clueless reunion, her answer clearly points to her true passion: "I hope to be doing theatre until I’m dead.”
