When you’re watching the Oscars from home, there’s a lot happening before your eyes: gorgeous gowns, big upsets, moving acceptance speeches, and, uh, John Cena wearing nothing but sandals and a smile.
However, before the show, after the show, and during the commercial breaks, there’s a whole bunch of celebrity moments you missed that you definitely need to see. From Emma Stone running from the bar to catch the next category, to Zendaya having a sweet Euphoria reunion with Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo, these are the moments that should have been broadcast.
First, we need to talk about Messi the dog, who not only stole the show during Best Picture nominee Anatomy of a Fall, but also the Oscars broadcast. For a while, Messi said he wouldn’t show, but then he did, and even got his own seat during the ceremony.
Right before a commercial break, viewers at home were treated to a funny image of Messi clapping along with everyone else, however, behind-the-scenes footage proved that was a bit, pre-recorded, and no, Messi cannot clap... (yet).
Also, we secretly think Messi was the murderer in Anatomy of a Fall. Pass it on!
Okay, let’s get to the Hollywood humans attending the night.
The commercial breaks are usually a great time for the celebs to get up from their seats and go hob-nob, nosh, and cheer their movie-star colleagues, and we managed to find some footage of just how many celebs love to hug and high-five.
After Da’Vine Joy Randolph won her historic Best Supporting Actress award, fellow nominees Colman Domingo and Danielle Brooks ran to congratulate the freshly-minted Oscar winner in her seat.
Although not winning a trophy last night Colman Domingo was the man of the hour. He had a sweet Euphoria reunion with Zendaya. Honestly, their scenes together in the hit show (stream now on Crave) are what make the show so noteworthy and touching. Hope he comes back for season 3!
In the same video, we can see John Krasinski hobnobbing with Ted Danson, and Emma Stone giving a big squeeze to an unidentified person.
Speaking of Emma Stone, who caused a huge upset by not only winning the Best Actress award of the night, but also splitting her dress right before she came up on stage, fans caught her at the Dolby Theater bar realizing she needed to watch the next category and frantically running out after making a big stink. We love her ball of energy as she bounces out in those heels. How she is running in that dress, we’ll never know.
It seems a lot of things happened at the bar that we didn’t see during the telecast, like the new smoking crew. That is, Kirsten Dunst, hubby Jesse Plemons, Best Director nominee Justine Treit, Anatomy of a Fall star Swann Arlaud, and Sophie Mas having a smoke and looking effortlessly cool. Smoking is bad for you kids, but these guys make it look glitzy.
We also had a Peaky Blinders reunion, with Anya Taylor-Joy making sure to give co-star and Best Actor winner Cillian Murphy a big hug during the commercial break.
Okay, we can’t talk about last night without talking about John Cena’s, er, body of work? Yeah, let’s go with that. The buff actor appeared in the buff to present the award for Best Costume, but what you didn’t see as the camera cut away was just how, uh, buff he was.
Someone give an award to his butt cheeks.
Also, we have footage of just how quickly John Cena had to slap on that costume as the nominees were read out. We can’t even put on socks this quickly.
Perhaps the most thrilling moment of the night was Ryan Gosling’s pink-hued rick-rollicking performance of “I’m Just Ken” with Slash and Van Halen and all the other Kens in the movie (including Simu Liu) joining him on stage. If you were surprised by his ability to sing and dance, A) you haven’t seen La La Land, and B) let’s not forget, as many social media fans pointed out, that he got his start on The Mickey Mouse Club!
Perhaps the best behind-the-scenes moment goes to nominees Annette Benning, Emma Stone, and Lily Gladstone all sharing a hug before their category is announced. Women’s solidarity rules.
Then the show was over and it was off to the after-parties, where many Canadians (okay and Americans and Brits too) walked the red carpet and set tongues wagging.
And that’s it for another year! No one got slapped and no one announced the wrong winner! Job well done, folks.
