Early this morning, the 2024 Oscar nominations were announced, and talk about a wake-up call. The Oscar race is usually the best part of winter, but Hollywood and fans alike are feeling like this might be the winter of our discontent with so many shocking snubs and surprises for the 2024 season.
Oppenheimer is leading the nominations with a whopping 13 nods across several categories, Poor Things followed with 11, Killers of the Flower Moon with 10, and mega-blockbuster hit Barbie earned 8.
However, there were some glaring snubs that fans are up in arms about. Barbie fans, we revolt at dawn!
While Barbie was honoured with a Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor nod, fans cannot believe director Greta Gerwig was snubbed for Best Director and star and producer Margot Robbie was snubbed for Best Actress.
In fact, fans are angry that Canadian hunk Ryan Gosling received a nod for Best Actor, but not Margot, which is literally the undercurrent that runs through the film!
No nomination for Margot Robbie or Greta Gerwig for the #Oscars but Ryan Gosling gets one. Literally the whole point of the Barbie film 😳 pic.twitter.com/SVpX6diGJb

Fans were also shocked about Zac Efron's performance in The Iron Claw being overlooked by the Academy.
Another shocking snub goes to Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in Martin Scorsese’s epic Killers of the Flower Moon. Leo is used to the snub, it used to be a running gag, until he finally won in 2016 for The Revenant.
Keeping with acting, another huge snub goes to the cast of May December. Charles Melton, Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore were lauded for their work in this film that dovetails off of the Mary Kay Letourneau scandal, but alas, the Academy was not swayed.
Regarding Best Director and Best Picture, another high-profile woman director was edged out - Emerald Fennell did not land a nod for Saltburn, which in turn was ignored for Best Picture. There is only one woman director in the Best Director category, Justine Triet for directing the Cannes darling Anatomy of a Fall.
Another huge snub was The Color Purple which perhaps was released too late in the year for Academy members to really clock it. Although the film as a whole did not receive acknowledgment from the Academny, Danielle Brooks DID receive a nomination for Best Supporting Actress though for her work in the film.
Can we get a HECK YEAH for Lily Gladstone nabbing a Best Actress nod for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon?! People reports she is the first Indigenous Best Actress nominee, and what’s more, it’s full circle. Because her high school yearbook named her the student most likely to win an Oscar! We’re rooting for you, Lily!
Another great surprise is America Ferrera’s nod for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Barbie. That monologue got us all shook.
Men of colour are also populating the nominations, and we love this. Colman Domingo nabbed a Best Actor nod for his role in Rustin, Jeffrey Wright is also in that category for his work in American Fiction, and Sterling K. Brown is in the Best Supporting Actor category, also for American Fiction. We’re so excited to see how this will play out.
The Oscars will air March 10 at 7:00 p.m. ET on CTV where Jimmy Kimmel returns as host. The full list of nominees is below!
