Call Me By Your Name mega-star Timothée Chalamet will soon be singing, “come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination!” News has just dropped that the Dune and Little Women headliner has been cast as Willy Wonka in a new prequel by Warner Bros titled Wonka.
Deadline is reporting that Timothée’s Wonka will “focus on a young Willy Wonka and his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory.”
Sources also tell the outlet that Wonka will mark the first time the Oscar-nominated actor gets to cut a rug and dazzle us with his singing and fancy footwork on film, as the film will include several musical numbers.
We think Tim is made for musicals, after seeing him cut footloose in Call Me By Your Name and Little Women. Deadlines sources state he’s been the top choice for this part for quite a while but securing him up until now was difficult due to scheduling and the time needed to rehearse the song and dance numbers.
The story is based on Roald Dahl’s famous book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and has already had two famous film adaptations – 1971’s Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory that starred the iconic Gene Wilder, and 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp.
Tim’s Wonka will be directed by Paul King, although plot details are unknown at press time. But this origin story will mark the first adaptation not to feature Charlie Bucket.
Frequent collaborator Saoirse Ronan, who costarred with Tim in Lady Bird and Little Women, will definitely cheer for his casting, as she’s previously gushed about his dancing skills. On Late Night with Seth Meyers, she recalled, “Timmy is a really good dancer. He did ballet for a while.”
“He would try to [change] the steps. I’d tell him that we should follow the ropes,” she added of their dance scenes together in Little Women.
Fans of the hunky Dune and French Dispatch star have also taken to Twitter to express their excitement - so much so that Willy Wonka was a trending topic on Twitter all long weekend.
Now they say this is the first time Tim will sing and dance on film, but have they forgotten about this wonderful treasure of a video? Where a very young Chalamet from 2012 raps and dances during a talent showcase? You're welcome.
