This is why Michael B. Jordan wasn’t in 'Star Wars'

And it's our loss, to be honest

If it were up to many of us, Michael B. Jordan would star in pretty much everything, whether he's appropriate for the role or not. But not so for director J.J. Abrams, who turned down Jordan after what the actor says was a pretty terrible audition for 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

In an interview with Variety about his latest movie, Without Remorse, Jordan said, "I think it was I couldn't wrap my brain around some of the sides, because you know when you're reading for these high-level projects, there's never really any specificity in the sides. ... Everything's like super vague, everything is in secret. Reading through, I just couldn't connect it. I definitely bombed that one for sure. I’m pretty sure I ran out of there."

(Sides, by the way, are select pages of a scene given to an actor for an audition.)

Because he was unable to connect with the absolutely very complicated sci-fi franchise (at least for those of us who've never seen a single Star War), Jordan said, it was "probably my worst audition to date."

Jordan was auditioning for the role of Finn, which ultimately went to John Boyega, a delightful fit.

But they weren't the only two to audition for the role. Tom Holland, too, gave it a shot – and also bombed.

The Spider-Man star recently told Backstage, “I remember my audition for Star Wars, I was like four or five auditions in, and I think I was auditioning for John Boyega’s role. I remember doing this scene with this lady, bless her, and she was just a drone. So I was doing all of this, like, ‘We gotta get back to the ship!’ And she was going, ‘Bleep, bloop bloop, bleep bloop.’ I just couldn’t stop laughing. I found it so funny. And I felt really bad, because she was trying really hard to be a convincing android or drone or whatever they’re called. Yeah, I obviously didn’t get the part. That wasn’t my best moment.”

Again: very understandable, though Holland has made a name for himself fighting all sorts of beings against a green screen. And so has Jordan when it comes to Black Panther.

Perhaps Star Wars is just a step – or a galaxy? – too far.
