The whip and the fedora are back, and with a fresh face too. As we learned last year, there is going to be a fifth installment into the nearly-40-year tale of Indiana Jones, our sexy, swashbuckling archeologist/professor/Casanova (who is afraid of snakes and can’t land a plane).
It turns out that Harrison Ford will be joined by a new and unlikely co-star: Fleabag breakout star Phoebe Waller-Bridge. This is a pairing we have GOT to see.
Disney has officially confirmed that Waller-Bridge has signed on to star opposite Ford in an unspecified capacity. Will she be a new love interest (Marion Ravenwood won’t be happy)? Will she be a baddie, like Elsa in The Last Crusade, or Crystal Skull soviet Cate Blanchett? Or will she bring her pure, unadulterated comedic talent to the franchise, as seen in Fleabag?
So far, Disney and Lucasfilm aren’t spilling too many details in their press release. We don’t even have a title yet. But we do know that hallowed director Steven Spielberg, who has helmed the past four films, will step aside this time in favour of James Mangold.
Don’t worry; Spielberg will still serve as producer, alongside long-time producing buddies Kathleen Kennedy (who is president of Lucasfilm), Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel.
Waller-Bridge is no stranger to the Lucasfilm universe: she previously had a notable role as the droid L3-37 in Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story, the Star Wars prequel about none other than Han Solo (played rather famously by Ford). We think we can consider her inclusion in Indiana Jones a reunion of sorts!
In the meantime, PWB is also planning another Solo reunion -- this time with Donald Glover. The two will appear together for a Mr. & Mrs. Smith Amazon series. That should keep her busy until filming for Indiana Jones begins this summer.
PWB famously wrote Fleabag as a theatre piece that premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013, and went on to win Primetime Emmys for the TV adaptation, including Best Actress and Best Comedy Series.
John Williams, who originally composed the iconic score and has served as composer for the past four films will also return. No word on whether Shia Labeouf will return as Indie’s son Mutt, but we might hazard a guess here that Labeouf will be too busy with other matters. We also don’t know if John Rhys-Davies will return for his role as Sallah, but if there’s anybody who can rib Indy for being named after the dog, we’re sure PWB can take those reigns.
So far, the release date for the movie is set for July 29, 2022 and hasn’t been pushed due to COVID-19.
