If you're a big Father of the Bride fan, you'll be delighted to know it's the latest movie to get the remake treatment (or re-remake). This time, it's got Andy Garcia at the helm, in a fresh Cuban-American take.
Garcia is widely known for portraying the oft-sung-about Fernando in the wonderful Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and, of course, his work in the Ocean's franchise and The Godfather: Part III. (Don't @ us, Mamma Mia 2 was a good movie.)
Garcia will not only star but executive produce the film alongside Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"I'm very excited to join The Father of the Bride, a beloved film that has brought so much joy to so many over the years and to represent my Cuban culture and heritage in this story," Garcia said in a statement. "I commend Warner Brothers for their foresight and celebrate this opportunity they have created."
Although most are familiar with the 1991 film (and its 1995 sequel) starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, the original Father of the Bride actually came in 1950 and starred Spencer Tracey and Elizabeth Taylor.
All of them centre around a dad struggling with his daughter growing up and getting married amid the chaotic preparation for the wedding itself. (All are a delight.)
The timing for Garcia's new film couldn't be more impeccable, with the cast of the 1991 version having reunited after 25 years this past September for a Netflix special. It was a brief continuation of the story, with the cast gathered together via Zoom to read the new script, titled "Part 3-ish," and following the wedding of Matty (Kieran Culkin).
Writer and director Nancy Meyers returned to captain the proceedings, as did much of the original cast, including Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Martin Short. A few new faces also dropped by, including Robert De Niro and Florence Pugh.
In other words, we can't get enough Father of the Bride, bring it on, Garcia.
