Talk about a hole in one. Okay, so you can’t actually see where Adam Sandler’s ball landed during an epic Happy Gilmore recreation that he shared on social media, but all the fans out there would probably like to believe it was exactly like in the movie.

On February 16—the 25th anniversary of the goofy golf movie starring Sandler, Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Carl Weathers, and Frances Bay—Sandler posted a celebratory video of himself on the golf course recreating the memorable Happy Gilmore drive.

“Okay, it’s been 25 years since I’ve done this, let’s see what happens,” he tells the camera before walking up to his tee. “I’m scared… Shooter McGavin, this is for you,” he adds in reference to McDonald’s bad guy character. Sandler then steps up and takes a pretty spot-on swing that definitely went further than a little tappy.

“And I’m not lying to you that is smashed! Smashed.” He then walks back to the camera. “And that went pretty well. Ya dead, Shooter,” he adds, breaking into a taunting Happy laugh.

No word on whether Sandler celebrated with a delicious Subway sandwich, but Shooter McGavin was definitely not consoling himself with pieces of you-know-what for breakfast. Nor was he laying around in the hay all day, no matter what you say. Instead, McDonald also reprised his role to fire back at Happy with a Twitter video of his own, in which he made a perfect putt into a glass and reminded Happy that it’s all about the short game.

“Nice drive, Gilmore. Twenty-five years, huh? Let’s see if it’s Shooter’s tour. Check it out… Drive for the show, putt for the dough,” he says before making his shot. “Shooter! Still got it,” he adds, blowing imaginary smoke from his fingers.

Stiller, meanwhile, didn’t break out a ‘stache or put on the nursing scrubs and film a video, but he did take a break from his “arts and crafts” to get into character in the comments of Sandler’s post. No word if he was pouring a “warm glass of shut the hell up” though.

Even movie sponsor Subway and the PGA itself got into the spirit following Sandler’s drive.

As for the fans? Well they seemed to love it all, and plenty of them even clamoured online for a Happy Gilmore sequel already.

Happy Gilmore hit theatres back in 1996 (remember theatres?) a year after Sandler’s first big screen success, Billy Madison, was released. The Dennis Dugan-directed movie earned more than $40 million US on a $12 million budget, and those first two films even inspired the name of Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison Productions. Now, the company has pumped out more than 40 titles, almost all of which starred or sometimes guest-starred Sandler.

These days, Sandler is producing movies for Netflix, which are said to be some of the most popular films on the streaming service. In that vein, is it any wonder that the actor is worth a reported $420 million US? And to think that it all started with a spoiled rich kid going back to school and an epic golf swing.

As fans hold out hope for some kind of sequel, let’s all meet on the ninth hole to celebrate 25 years of quotable Happy goodness. And be sure to wear something nice.
