Kristen Stewart went from stealing our hearts in Happiest Season to becoming the princess who left a long-lasting impact on the world. A first look image of Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer is here, and we have no choice but to stan!
Stewart will play Princess Di in the film Spencer, directed by Jackie filmmaker Pablo Larraín. Filming for the biopic has already begun in Germany before moving to the UK. Spencer will give viewers an intimate look at the last days of Diana's marriage to Prince Charles. It focuses on one weekend in Princess Diana's life, as she spends the Christmas holidays with the Royal Family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk and decides to end her marriage.
The first look image shows Stewart as the late princess in a head-tilt pose, bearing an incredible resemblance to Princess Diana. We literally had to do a double-take. The Twilight actress is wearing a red blazer and a black hat with a short veil and matching shirt, matching the one Diana wore in 1986 when she visited a spinal injuries unit in England.
"Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life," Stewart said in a statement. "It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her."
Newly-announced cast members joining Spencer include Sally Hawkins, Sean Harris and Timothy Spall. Spencer is written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and produced by Larraín and Juan de Dios Larraín, Jonas Dornbach, Janine Jackowski, and Paul Webster.
"We are extremely grateful for the support of our distributors worldwide, our partners and funders who have shown tremendous commitment to us in these extraordinary times," said the producers. "With Kristen Stewart, Steven Knight and the rest of our fantastic team both in front and behind the camera we are bringing Spencer to the world. It is an independently produced film made for the big screen about an iconic woman’s own declaration of independence. We couldn’t be more excited!"

The synopsis for the film from Neon reads: “December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.”
Seeing Stewart as Princess Diana makes us wonder what her accent will sound like. She told InStyle last fall that she was working very hard at perfecting the late Diana’s accent and admitted it was an ongoing challenge. “The accent is intimidating as all hell because people know that voice, and it’s so, so distinct and particular,” Stewart said. “I’m working on it now and already have my dialect coach.”
Stewart also said she did her research on Princess Diana ahead of shooting the film. "In terms of research, I've gotten through two and a half biographies, and I'm finishing all the material before I actually go make the movie. It's one of the saddest stories to exist ever, and I don't want to just play Diana — I want to know her implicitly. I haven't been this excited about playing a part, by the way, in so long," she said.
Stewart isn't the only one that's excited about her playing the part of Princess Diana. Fans of Stewart and Princess Di took to Twitter to share their reactions to the first look photo.
Neon is hoping for an autumn 2021 release of Spencer, ahead of the 25th anniversary of Diana’s death in 2022.
