Since her debut, Olivia Rodrigo has remained a strong and steady fan of the 1990s — in her style of music, and her wardrobe. The pop singer loves a choker and a tube top.

This past week, she offered up a hit of nostalgia during an interview at SiriusXM Studios in Los Angeles to promote her newest single “Vampire” while wearing classic black Mary Janes, complete with a cropped graphic tee, and a black pleated miniskirt. She also had on a pair of silver metal drop earrings in the shape of little hearts, and a collection of silver and black rings.

But it’s the Mary Janes that especially pop in this look. At one time, the classic shoe was a go-to for little girls, and over time, runways and retail crafted a pair for the older set.

Fun fact: the shoe’s name and style come from a character named Mary Jane in the old Buster Brown comic strip, which first ran in the New York Herald in 1902. The shoes were first a go-to for dancers in the 1920s, and later young actress Shirley Temple’s signature when she burst onto the screen in the 1930s. As the decades went by, YSL and Dior became regular fans, and today, just about every brand — including Marc Jacobs and Manolo Blahnik — has one in their collection.

Often worn bare, with tights, or a thick pair of socks, celebs are resurfacing the long-buried style. Recently, Wednesday star Jenna Ortega wore them on the cover of the Sunday Times Style magazine, while model Gigi Hadid has been spotted wearing them over top white tights, and Emma Stone wore a pair earlier this year while at a New York Knicks basketball game.

Forever style star Sarah Jessica Parker has long been a fan of Mary Janes and has most often worn them under a pair of classic blue jeans while running errands around New York City.

Their popularity is clear: it’s a comfy, cozy shoe, with straps and low block heels (rarely surpassing 2 inches). And because they’re so classic and sleek, they have a tendency to go with just about everything. They also transition pretty damn well from daytime to night.
