The Outsiders was a big hit in the early '80s about the bond between a bunch of greasers, and it launched the acting careers of Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, and Emilio Estevez. But now, 37 years after its release, star Rob Lowe has some tea to spill about mega-movie-Goliath Tom Cruise’s audition antics. Turns out, he was a bit of a prima donna. While speaking to Dax Shepard for his podcast,
Armchair Expert, Lowe recounted that the
Mission Impossible star was none too pleased when he realized he wouldn’t be getting his own personal suite at the Plaza Hotel during the second stage of auditions for Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 coming-of-age film.“All of the LA people survived the LA auditions, and then the hand-picked people had to go to New York to face the New York version,” Lowe recalled. “First time I ever stayed at The Plaza Hotel! And we check-in and Tom finds out that we’re sharing a room and JUST. GOES. BALLISTIC.” As Dax and crew laugh over the anecdote, Lowe continues, “I remember going, ‘Wow, this guy is the real deal.’ I mean it made me laugh, it was gnarly. But in the end of it, you can’t argue with the results. He’s had his eye on the ball since day one.”Hmm, Tom Cruise may have only been 18 at the time, but it sounds like he knew big things were coming his way, something Lowe actually praises Cruise for while speaking about the incident. “The notion that an 18-year-old actor with a walk-on part in
Endless Love and like a 7th lead in
Taps could have that kind of like wherewithal . . . To me, what’s great about the story is, there’s certain people who have always been who they are, and that element of them has powered them to where they are today and the rest is history.”Lowe also recalled how Tom Cruise was insistent on performing a certain stunt himself for the film. “He ended up being the only one who could do a backflip. It is in the movie for no reason. Just to do it.”Now that sounds like the Tom Cruise we all know and love. His love of performing death-defying stunts for the camera is
well documented, from dangling from an airplane mid-flight in
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, to
breaking his ankle while jumping from a roof in
Mission Impossible: Fallout. Hey Tom, maybe these missions are actually kinda impossible. Stay safe, Maverick![video_embed id='5989732658001']RELATED: Tom Cruise confirms two new 'Mission: Impossible' movies[/video_embed]
