Is it possible to know too much about the romantic lives of our favourite celebrities? Before this week, we might have answered "No" (see, for example, our extremely high tolerance for Kravis PDAs and seemingly endless Pete Davidson dating updates) but along came Jada and Will, who may have pushed things too far and have some of us pleading "TMI!"
That's kind of what Jada's all about though. Pinkett-Smith is known for breaking barriers and tearing down boundaries on her award-winning Facebook series Red Table Talk. The program typically features Jada, her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris, Jada and Will’s daughter Willow plus a celebrity guest.
Last week, that guest was Gwyneth Paltrow (who is no stranger to the TMI zone) and the panel tackled a laundry list of issues all pertaining to sex, including pornography, the female orgasm, and hook-up culture. Some viewers felt that things got awkward, however, when the topic of Will and Jada’s sex life came up.
On the most recent installment of Etalk Off The Record, Lainey and Danielle dissected that specific moment — which, for some, inspired the same ick factor level that comes with dissecting a frog in tenth grade biology class. In similar form, very few people truly want to know what’s inside.
Jada told viewers, "The thing Will and I talk about a lot is the journey,” she said. “We started in this at a very young age, you know, 22 years old. That's why the accountability part really hit for me because I think you expect your partner to know [what you need], especially when it comes to sex."
What this implies is that Will did not know what Jada needed (or needs) and perhaps vice versa. Basically, people extrapolated that to mean Will and Jada had problems in bed. The question is: is this an overshare or brutal honesty? The internet has feelings.
Jada says it’s like this:
While on the internet, people are hearing this:
And feeling this:
This isn’t the first time we’ve been subjected to unsolicited stories about what it’s like under the sheets for Mr. and Mrs. Smith. There was the unforgettable 2020 “Entanglement” of course, during which Will and Jada presented a united front about Jada’s relationship with singer August Alsina (a dalliance that took place while the Smiths were allegedly “on a break”).
This latest story, as Lainey and Danielle point out, comes at a time when Will is campaigning for an Oscar with his starring role in King Richard. He also has a sit-down with Oprah on Apple TV+, dropping today, and a candid memoir, titled Will, that comes out November 9.
That likely means we’re in for a lot more coverage when it comes to this intimate topic. Do we maybe just need to be on a little “break” from the Smiths for a bit?
