Tiffany Haddish is taking a break from her hair and she wants you to know she hasn't lost her mind—she's gained it. On Tuesday, the comedian kept fans updated on the progress of her latest transformation on Instagram, sharing three videos in total cutting her hair and eventually completely shaving her head. Haddish said that she’s been wanting to cut her hair for years and is using her time in quarantine to finally make the move. She ready. In the first IG live, the
Night School star began cutting her locs on camera while her friends voice their concerns in the background. When one points out that Haddish has a movie coming up, likely referring to
The Card Counter, Haddish reminds her that she’ll be wearing a wig for the part. “Who wants to buy a loc?” Haddish joked with her followers. The second video shows Haddish with her newly cut hair, which she proudly displays while making it clear to her followers that her decision was not based on a lapse in judgement. “Why when a woman decides, hey I’m going to cut this hair off, because I want to see my scalp, she got to have a mental problem? Nothing is wrong with my brain you guys,” says Haddish. “I want to see my scalp.”
In the joyful video, Haddish said she already feels a newfound freedom with her short hair, which will require less maintenance both physically and mentally. “It’s the first time I jumped in the shower and was not concerned about not getting my hair wet. And it felt so good,” said Haddish after finishing her first round of cuts. “You could see my face even better. My neck don’t hurt. You know how heavy them locs were? That’s a lot of neck work. Now we’re just, boom, shoulders relaxed. My gait is better. And now I can go running every day. I can train my ass off every single day and not have to worry about ‘Oh my hair.’”The actor pointed out the time-consuming and expensive maintenance of Black women’s hair, which continues to be
heavily politicized and subjected to racist laws and prejudice. “Let’s just be honest. As a Black woman, that’s a good hour, to two or three hours of your day. It is a lot of work. So, I’m taking time off,” said Haddish. “I’m going to use that same energy that I would have been putting to my hair into my mind.”[video_embed id='1913786']RELATED: Five essential hair hacks for natural Black hair [/video_embed]After much convincing, Haddish’s friend Precious eventually gets her clippers and puts the finishing touches on
