The Oscars just snubbed J-Lo, Eddie Murphy and female directors everywhere

The awards season train took a very unexpected detour on Monday morning, when the (kind of shocking) 2020 Oscar nominations were announced. Sure, we’re used to the snubs and oversights that nominations bring, but for so many expected names not to be on that ballot was almost too much for our movie-loving hearts. Here are the list of the most egregious misses.

Jenny’s staying on that block

We can probably all agree that Hustlers was a mood, right? It was the first film about strippers not shot with that “male gaze” that's often the default with that subject matter. It empowered women. It was fun but impactful. And at the centre of it all was one Jennifer Lopez, who blew us all away with her performance as Ramona.Well, obviously she didn’t blow everyone away. Because while J-Lo earned a Golden Globe, SAG and Critics Choice Award nomination, she wasn’t even a footnote at the Oscar nods. Someone give Greta her due already

Hey, remember that time Ricky Gervais called out the Globes voters for not recognizing any female directors? He joked that the solution was for Hollywood to just stop hiring them. So how sad is it that his statements kind of rang true on Monday morning, when female directors were completely shut out, AGAIN? We really thought Greta Gerwig would finally get some deserved love for Little Women, but we were more than a little wrong. No women, at all. Across the board. The oversight didn't go unnoticed.

Farewell to this winning streak

A little over a week ago we were celebrating Awkwafina being the first woman of Asian descent to win a lead actress trophy at the Golden Globes. Now it seems she won't get the chance to step out on the stage  and represent at the Oscars. We weren’t just shocked at her snub either; The Farewell director Lulu Wang had been high on our list of expected nods.

You know who else was on our list of expected nods? Lupita Nyong’o for her work on Us. Just paint us shocked again.

We should probably “Let it Go” but…

How was Frozen 2, arguably the most successful animated movie of 2019 with $1.34 billion worldwide, not nominated in the Best Animated Feature category? Look, we get that Oscar voters don’t always want to hang with the popular kids but just because something is popular doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve recognition. Eddie Murphy’s comeback is halted

After it premiered at TIFF,  Dolemite Is My Name all but felt like a guarantee that it would be Murphy’s year with voters thanks to his performance. The actor’s team has been campaigning pretty hard leading up to these nominations, so the fact that his name wasn’t called is pretty strange. Especially since it was just the previous night at that the Critics Choice Awards where he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award and Dolemite was all over that clips package. His omission is just Nutty, and we have a feeling that could go all the way back to 2011 when Murphy backed out of hosting the Oscars.
