SZA wants fans to know that she was of legal age when she dated Drake

SZA is checking in to make sure that fans know that she did not (repeat: did not) date Drake when she was just 17 years old. Yes, says the singer whose full name is Solána Imani Rowe, the two musical powerhouses dated — but not in an “underage or creepy” way. SZA’s social media clarification comes in the wake of the release of a new track from 21 Savage and Metro Boomin’ whose latest, ‘Mr. Right Now’, features a verse from Canada’s own Aubrey Graham. Drake popped up on the track rapping the following lyrics and dropping SZA’s name not once but twice in just two lines: "Yeah, said she wanna f#*k to some SZA, wait/'Cause I used to date SZA back in '08," raps Drake.Even the most casual rap listener will notice that “wait” rhymes handily with “08” (also: “excruciate” or “U.S. presidential debate”) but it isn’t Drake’s rhyme that SZA is taking issue with — even if the lyric comes across as a major boast. Yes, they did spend some time together in the aughts, but it was legal, innocent, and consensual, she clarified while professing her complete understanding when it comes to artistic licence and the use of the year 2008.

Despite SZA’s fans expressing incredulity over her dating past ("Now why'd drake have to bring sza's good name out like that," tweeted one) it seems as though the two artists maintain a level of friendship and respect for each other, artistically speaking. ChampagnePapi (Drake’s Instagram account) championed SZA’s release of ‘Hit Different’ just last month in his IG stories.
