In the weeks leading up to the Oscars, music fans everywhere were no doubt on the edge of their seats waiting for the likes of Elton John, Idina Menzel and Cynthia Erivo to hit the stage with renditions of their nominated songs. What no one was excepting was the appearance of one Marshall Mathers, a.k.a. Eminem. The entire world was shocked when, after Lin-Manuel Miranda introduced a montage of awesome songs from stellar films—including 8 Mile—Eminem popped up onstage to perform his legendary hit “Lose Yourself,” 17 years after the song won an Oscar for Best Original Song. It was a monumental moment because when the rapper won nearly two decades ago in 2003 he failed to show up and perform the anthem, so you could say this was him finally taking “his shot.” But, while the rapper definitely served up mom’s spaghetti (a plant-based version, you’d assume), there was no real explanation or set-up from a host or presenter. That’s probably why it took people a while to figure out why Eminem was there—it’s been a busy awards season after all, and people were tired. As a result, the reaction from the crowd was a mixed bag; some celebs enthusiastically sang along. Others just looked perplexed, to the point where their reactions are going viral.Martin Scorsese seemed to be taking a nap while those around him were beginning to lose themselves. Or maybe he just didn’t want to get his palms sweaty by nodding to the beat. Regardless, someone should have reminded him the cameras were watching so that he could snap back to reality.Idina Menzel, who performed with all the Elsas earlier in the night, seemed kind of into it because she was bobbing her head, but she also had that confused AF face you sometimes get when you just can’t wrap your brain around what’s happening in front of you. And yes, the internet was also there for that. And then there was In Memoriam-performer Billie Eilish, whose facial reactions during Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig’s presenter speech had caught the internet’s attention earlier in the night. It’s easy to forget the singer is just 18 years old, but everyone knows teenagers have the best reactions to… everything. In the case of Eminem, Eilish also didn’t disappoint. Star reactions aside, it’s safe to say that everyone seemed into the powerful performance by the end. Eminem received a standing ovation, basically making up for all of that lost time. Sure, it could be one of the reasons the show went 20 minutes over, and it was also a bit confusing. But there’s no denying he owned the night. After all, second chance opportunities like this only come up “once in a lifetime,” and that guy definitely took his shot.[video_embed id='1896513']Related: All the fierce fashion from the 2020 Oscars[/video_embed]
