Simon Cowell breaks his back in e-bike accident

Simon Cowell is recovering from a major accident after the America’s Got Talent judge fell on Saturday while riding his new e-bike. Cowell was testing out the bike in the courtyard of his home in Malibu when he fell, breaking his back in several places and requiring emergency surgery. Cowell reportedly underwent the extensive surgery on August 8, which included a metal rod being inserted into his back.The X Factor judge appears to be in good spirits following his surgery and was able to tweet the following day, or at least dictate a tweet caption with a sense of humour. "Some good advice... If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time," he posted, before thanking his followers for their well wishes.Cowell, who previously had a major fall down the stairs of his London home in 2017, also thanked the medical personnel who performed his surgery and have been assisting with his rehabilitation.  According to Cowell’s rep, the celebrity is “doing fine.”

According to the BBC, Cowell’s six-year-old son Eric, whom he shares with partner Lauren Silverman, was present at the time of his father’s accident. Fans of Cowell’s reality competition shows will likely recognize Eric, who frequently pops in to say hello to his dad during filming. Cowell was scheduled to appear on the first live America’s Got Talent episode of the season . It’s unclear yet whether the judge and producer will still appear on the August 11th episode via video.Cowell’s fellow AGT judges have been sending their love on social media. New judge Sofia Vergara shared a picture of herself along with Howie Mandel and Heidi Klum from the AGT set, writing “We miss our boss!! Come back fast @simoncowell!!” The three celebs are in masks and pointing to the empty chair on set, where it appears they were rehearsing for Tuesday’s show. Klum shared the same image, writing “Wishing you a speedy recovery @simoncowell.”

Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden tweeted a message hoping for Cowell’s speedy recovery and sent love to Lauren and Eric.

ABC is reporting that Cowell’s injury is renewing concerns over the safety of electronic or e-bikes. Sales for e-bikes have surged since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, which is cause for concern because of the much higher risk of injury with e-bikes compared to traditional bicycles or scooters.
