The ongoing pandemic resulted in MTV pivoting this year’s show and opting for a special Greatest of All Time (GOAT) edition that honoured the best in film and TV from the past 40 years. Blair and Gellar first won a golden popcorn statute for their smooch back in 2000, and on Sunday were awarded the Legendary Lip Lock Award.
The pair filmed their acceptance speech in a backyard that is giving us serious yard envy and touched on the impact their same sex kiss. "I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people for so long is not just for the initial shock value, but because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realize certain aspects of their sexuality and help make people comfortable to be who they really are,” said Blair.
"It also presented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic toward acceptance in pop culture,” added Gellar. “And also, it was super hot.”
The pair then attempted to recreate their iconic kiss, albeit with precautions that made it appropriate for 2020. This year, nothing is hotter than physical distancing and plexiglass kisses.
The late 1990s teen film starred Blair and Gellar along with Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe. Directed by Roger Kumble, the dark and romantic drama was an adaptation of the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Blair expanded on the importance of her character's kiss with Gellar, which arrived at a time when there were few LGBTQ romantic moments shown on screen. “A kiss. Between two young actresses. On screen. In a mainstream teen movie. In 2000. It was a sweet and delicious kiss for my character, Cecile,” wrote Blair in an Instagram post she shared on Sunday. “And she wanted more. And I must say it was a really good kiss. What feels so delicious to me now is how it isn’t shocking in 2020. It stands for a shift in thinking.”
Blair thanked her longtime friend, and Kumble for casting her in what would be her first major role in a feature film. “May we all kiss one day again soon,” continued Blair. “This one will always be a point of pride.”
In October, Demi Lovato sat down with Queer Eye’s Tan France for National Coming Out Day and said that Blair and Gellar’s kiss in Cruel Intentions helped her realize she was queer. “It was definitely when I was young and should not have been watching Cruel Intentions, but I did and it was that scene where they made out on the park lawn. I was just like, ‘Oh, wait a minute. I really like that, I wanna try it,’” said Lovato. “And then, when I was like 17, I did get down with that and that’s when I knew."
Since appearing together in the cult classic late '90s teen film, Blair and Gellar have remained close friends. Gellar has been by Blair’s side throughout her health struggles and eventual diagnosis with multiple sclerosis, and she celebrated Gellar’s birthday in April with a picture of the pair taking home their golden popcorn in 2000. “To one of the great loves of my life... you have always maintained your center. And believe me, we all appreciate that. And you,” wrote Blair. “Our beacon of light. Our young mama bear. My best kisser. #nobodydoesitbetter #sarahmichellegellar happy birthday. I can’t wait to see you. I wonder if your kids know how blessed they are to have you all the time right now.”
Sunday night's show was hosted by Vanessa Hudgens and included awards for Comedy Giant (Kevin Hart), Scream Queen (Jamie Lee Curtis), Heartbreaking Breakup (Jason Segel and Kristen Bell in Forgetting Sarah Marshall), She-Ro (Gal Gadot), Zero to Hero (William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence in both Karate Kid and Cobra Kai), and Dance Your Ass Off (Kevin Bacon in Footloose). The late Chadwick Boseman was also honoured with the Hero for the Ages Award.
