Remember back in the mid-2000s when people could go outside, flat irons were a thing, and teens around the world were obsessed with Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody coupling up IRL following their undeniable chemistry on The O.C.? What a time to be alive. So it’s no wonder that fans everywhere were devastated when the onscreen high school sweethearts called it quits on their actual relationship in 2006. As it turns out, Bilson is aware of the mass devastation, and she’s sorry. Her apology came about on March 26 after a writer for InStyle shared just how much Bilson and Brody’s breakup “ruined middle school” for her in the magazine’s weekly “Breakups That Broke Us” column. The column explores failed celeb relationships and the impact they had on a person who was obsessed with them. “When I heard that First Couple of The O.C., Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody, had broken up in real life, I felt true despair,” writes Isabel Jones. “Did I personally know either of them? Nope. Did I know literally anything about their relationship other than that it was now over and it had started at some point in the show’s first season? Negative. And yet the bond I felt to these people (proctored via a small TV screen in my poster-strewn childhood bedroom) was incredibly strong.”Jones speaks for a large subset of fans to be sure, which is probably why when Bilson saw the post on InStyle’s Instagram account she piped up in the comments. “IM SORRY!” she wrote. “He fared really well!”

To be fair, both actors went on to fare “pretty well.” Bilson shares a daughter named Briar Rose with Hayden Christensen, whom she was with for seven years before moving on to a certain former SNL star (you may have heard of him, Bill Hader?). And Brody is married to OG Gossip Girl star—Blair Waldorf herself—Leighton Meester. The pair got hitched back in 2014 and they share a cute daughter named Arlo who was born a year later. But back to Brody and Bilson. When The O.C. kicked off in 2003 their storyline hit home with plenty of fans. He was the cute, loveable geek who was obsessed with the super nice popular girl, and when they did finally get together their relationship was one for the ages (Seth + Summer 4EVA). In real life the couple started dating the same year the show launched. They were together for three years and shared two dogs: a pit bull named Penny Lane and a poodle named Thurmen Murmen. When they split, they were amicable enough to share custody. This all went down before Instagram of course, so there was never any cute pups and pals photos or hanging out snaps for fans to really obsess over. That’s why it was no real surprise that O.C. fans freaked out in 2019 when Bilson and Brody ran into each other at the airport and documented the exchange to make it Insta-official. “Ran into my ol buddy from jfk to lax #californiaherewecome,” Bilson captioned the silly selfie.
Well there you have it. Middle school may have been ruined for certain fans, but at least the idea of being friends with your ex remains alive and well.
