Today, Penguin Random House announced they will publish Prince Harry’s long awaited, and much debated, memoir. The title, the release date, and the cover photo were announced, and if you were wondering if Harry ate it up, fam, HE ATE THAT.
The title is a searing nod to the slur the Duke of Sussex has been called his entire life: “Spare.” As in, should anything ever happen to his older brother William, the heir to the British crown, there is a “spare.” In fact, for centuries, the catchall referring to both those in line to the throne and their sibling was “the heir and the spare.”
The cover is also an unflinching look into Harry’s blue eyes. The Duke looks directly into the camera with a look that dares any reader to meet his glance and hold it. He is daring us to look him in the eye and call him a spare to his face. We are low-key obsessed with his defiance.

In their announcement, Penguin Random House announced that the memoir will drop simultaneously around the world on January 10, 2023, in both paper and audio book, read by the author himself. It will also be published in 16 different languages.
RIP Amazon’s pre-orders.
The Penguin Random House press release reads that the memoir, “ takes readers immediately back to one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror.”
“As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.”
They describe the tell-all as, “a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.”
These details are creating a stir online, with many applauding the Duke’s bold choice of title and cover photo, and many others anxiously counting down the days until the book arrives on their doorstep.
#PrinceHarry could not have chosen a better title to his memoir. Amazing to see him taking ownership over his truth, with the word that's been used to disparage his value his whole life. What a way for this extraordinary man to reclaim his narrative! #Spare #GoodKingHarry pic.twitter.com/hP9TwhPSqD

Prince Harry ate that pic.twitter.com/peZyNerbOD
Pre-ordering a copy now. I am proud of him and for him. I know what it is to grow up in a family that likes to keep secrets, and throw shade or worse, heap abuse on those who want to rise above, get healed, and not live dysfunctionally. Good for #PrinceHarry #Spare https://t.co/csD7ME8QD8

You people called #PrinceHarry a spare his entire life and used it to bash and humiliate him and push you own negative stories. Now that he uses it… you wanna through hands?

Just thinking as an author… This is a brilliant title. Also, I’m not releasing anything in January. Not a single thing. He’s about to be on every best seller list until spring. I can only dream of the amount of pre-orders that this is already receiving. #spare #PrinceHarry pic.twitter.com/UGzVGni6ql
