During this tough time, it’s been really heart-warming and spirit-raising to see many celebrities band together to raise funds and donate much needed supplies to frontline healthcare workers amid the COVID-19 global pandemic. Doctors, nurses, paramedics, and hospitals now, more than ever, need our support in any way we can give it, and late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has always been their biggest cheerleader. On Tuesday, Jimmy tweeted from his official Twitter account that he and his wife, Molly McNearney, would be donating 1000 masks to the hospital that saved their son’s life. You might remember three years ago when Jimmy tearfully announced on his show that, after the birth of his son, William “Billy” Kimmel, hospital staff noticed his purple hue and, after jumping on the problem with speed and care, diagnosed Jimmy’s newborn son with tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles was the very place that saved his son’s life with emergency surgery, and so now Jimmy is making sure they are taken care of during a shortage of personal protective equipment like face masks.
Back then, Jimmy described the harrowing experience that is every parent’s nightmare. “It's a terrifying thing," he said. "You know, my wife is back in the recovery room, she has no idea what's going on. And I'm standing in the middle of a lot of very worried-looking people  . . . who are trying to figure out what the problem is."Explaining that tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia causes a blockage of the pulmonary valve, coupled with a hole in the wall between the left and right sides of his heart, Jimmy recounted  through tears how the surgeons at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, “opened [Billy's] chest and fixed one of the two defects in his heart. He went in there with a scalpel and did some kind of magic that I couldn't even begin to explain. He opened the valve, and the operation was a success. It was the longest three hours of my life.”After his tweet went out on Tuesday, announcing the donation and asking for the public to donate to the cause as well, the hospital responded with gratitude and thanks from their official Twitter account. Since his show Jimmy Kimmel Live! has switched to an at-home format during stay-at-home orders, Jimmy has made sure to highlight the stories of frontline healthcare workers. Recently, he teamed up with Jennifer Aniston to surprise a nurse who was infected with COVID-19 and offer financial relief to her and her coworkers. And last night, he gave his Spider-Man-loving son the best birthday surprise ever with a call from Peter Parker himself, Tom Holland.
