She went there.

When the Grammy nominations were announced on Tuesday, there was a lot of excitement over the fact that women dominated the nominations: in the Best Rock Performance and Best Country Album categories, all the noms were exclusively women. It seems that The Recording Academy has been listening to calls of greater inclusion and diversity (especially after president Neil Portnow told female artists to “step up”). But some musicians and performers weren’t happy with the nominations, and others think the academy still has a long way to go. Like Nicki Minaj, who tweeted yesterday that she’s still salty about losing the 2012 Best New Artist award. [video_embed id='-1']RELATED: Nicki Minaj: Women know your worth[/video_embed]“Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on billboard & bigger first week than any female rapper in the last decade- went on to inspire a generation,” she tweeted. “They gave it to the white man Bon Iver.”It was actually in 2010 that she made history with seven Billboard Hot 100 songs, so not only did her snub come at the 2011 Grammys, they snubbed her once more in 2012 too. In 2012, she was nominated for Best New Artist, but Bon Iver won against her, Skrillex, J. Cole, and The Band Perry. It should also be noted that though Bon Iver is fronted by Justin Vernon who is the primary songwriter, whom she’s most likely referring to when she says “white man Bon Iver,” there is more than one white person in Bon Iver.Neither Bon Iver nor Vernon have publicly made any statements about her slam at press time, but as this was all unfolding, they announced the cancellation of their 2021 Australian and New Zealand tour. Bad timing.Since posting her salty tweet, Nicki has changed her Twitter handle to “Mrs. Petty” and has tweeted a follow-up that is just her laughing away. Is she for real or is she toying with us now? Her rant also, for a brief time last night, had “white man Bon Iver” trending on twitter, with users obviously relishing the drama. Despite the Best New Artist loss, she has been nominated for Grammys a further nine times, although has sadly never won. This also isn't the first time Nicki has called out The Recording Academy. In 2019, Nicki claimed she was "bullied" into staying quiet about her secret beef with Grammys Executive Producer Ken Ehrlich. She’s not the only one who has a problem with the Grammy nominations this year. Canadians Justin Bieber and The Weeknd both took to social media to voice their displeasure over the show. Justin, who received four noms, was disappointed to be in the Pop category rather than in the R&B category.

The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) took to Twitter to call the academy corrupt after being snubbed for any nominations despite his album After Hours becoming the most streamed R&B album of all time. The Grammys have definitely made some noticeable changes this year, but with this many performers upset, they clearly still have a long way to go.
