Madonna is preparing to put her life on film…again. This time, the Material Girl is in the driver’s seat and in an unconventional twist, Madonna will be directing and co-writing her own biopic. Madonna did not become Madonna by following the rules.Madonna has teamed up with Oscar-winner Diablo Cody to help bring her life story to the big screen. “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer — a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” said Madonna in a
statement about the upcoming film. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”The film will fall under the direction of Universal Pictures producer Amy Pascal, who has a decades-long history with Madonna. “This movie is an absolute labor of love for me,” said Pascal in a
statement. “I have known Madonna since we made
A League of Their Own together, and I can’t imagine anything more thrilling than collaborating with her and Diablo on bringing her true-life story to the big screen with Donna and our partners at Universal.”Madonna’s involvement with Cody is an exciting prospect for the new film. Cody has an impressive track record of work, including the 2015 dramedy starring Meryl Streep as an aging rock star in
Ricki and the Flash. In 2007, Cody won an Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay for her coming of age film,
Juno. The author and screenwriter also wrote
Jennifer’s Body staring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, as well as
Young Adult and
Tully, with the latter films both starring Charlize Theron.Madonna has been posting videos of herself and Cody on Instagram since
August, sharing the creative process involved in putting her life story and iconic three-plus decade career into a script.
But mostly, it’s Madonna revealing that she was probably the kid in school who didn’t contribute much to the group project but was excellent at presenting. Come for Madonna’s descriptions of her most famous fashion moments and general messing around, stay for Cody’s hilariously frustrated glances at the camera.
Madonna has previously given cameras access to her private life with the groundbreaking 1991 documentary
Truth or Dare. Madonna funded and executive produced the Alek Keshishian film, which followed the singer during her 1990
Blonde Ambition Tour. The seven-time Grammy winner has also directed two feature films, including 2008’s
Filth and Wisdom and 2011’s
W.E., a biopic of researcher Wally Winthrop and Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, whose marriage to King Edward VIII led to his abdication of the throne. In addition to directing the film, W.E. was co-written by Madonna and Keshishian. Both films were panned by critics, but
W.E. did win a Golden Globe for Madonna’s original song “Masterpiece.”Successful biopics of musicians typically include some input from the artist, but Madonna’s level of involvement marks an unprecedented amount of access to a project. Hopefully it’s more
