For decades now, Madonna has been on the front lines of some of the most important social and civil movements of the modern era. The Queen of Pop and battle-tested provocateuse was talking about AIDS, fighting for a cure, and raising funds for research in the 80s and 90s when no other celebrity would. She knows what it takes to bring awareness and hope to a world mired in a global pandemic. So when she took to social media on Sunday to share a video of her thoughts on the COVID-19 global pandemic, it left quite a few people with a bad taste in their mouth.“That’s the thing about COVID-19, it doesn’t care about how rich you are, how famous you are, how funny you are, how smart you are, where you live, how old you are, what amazing stories you can tell, it’s the great equalizer,” she said. That in and of itself doesn’t sound so bad, but what made that statement land on the wrong side of cringeworthy for so many people was that she said it whilst soaking naked in a porcelain bathtub filled with rose petals as a pianist and harpist played in the background.[video_embed id='1918726']RELATED: Madonna cancels shows amid COVID-19 outbreak[/video_embed]The rest of
her video contained some rather contradictory statements that left some us scratching our heads. “What’s terrible about it,” she said in reference to coronavirus, “is what’s great about it. What’s terrible about it is it’s made us equal in many ways. And what’s wonderful about it is it’s made us equal in many ways.”Thank you, Obi Wan.Why the Material Girl chose to say her piece in such a manner is anyone’s guess, but fans and viewers – many of whom are worried about job-insecurity or paying rent (and not where their bath-petals are coming from) - were not impressed.“’Made us all equals in many ways’ - Madonna, whilst sat in a bathtub full of rose petals with a harp playing in the background,” tweeted
one user with an overload of snark. Another longtime Madonna fan
pointed out that, unlike her tireless AIDS efforts, she hasn’t donated a dime to research, or relief. “Stop spending thousands on rose petal baths and drop $ on aid now!” they said. But most viewers found the whole video
just bizarre and bewildering. This isn’t the first video Madonna has released about COVID-19. She also reworked her most iconic song ‘Vogue’ into a nonsensical song about
Fried Fish for some reason. Perhaps that’s what she was having for dinner that night, or perhaps she wants us to eat more of it while we’re quarantined? We just . . . have a lot of questions.[video_embed id='1893502']RELATED: Madonna called Canada boring and Canadians aren’t impressed[/video_embed]
