Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler shocked fans earlier this year when they announced their decision to separate after a decade together. But even though the Very Cavallari stars were open with fans in an Instagram post revealing their newfound status at the time, Cavallari hasn’t really spoken to any media about it all until recently. Now, in a new interview with People, the former Hills star has opened up about her marriage and what led to their decision to ultimately part ways, revealing that behind the scenes things had been a struggle for years. “I always thought it was interesting when people would refer to us as ‘couple goals,’” she said. “I was like, ‘If you guys only knew.’”In the story, Cavallari reveals the marriage really started breaking down during filming on the last season of their show, but that none of it actually made it on camera. “We definitely kept a lot of stuff private. Producers saw stuff, but they didn’t put it in the show—which is good, because I don’t want my kids to ever [see that],” she added.[video_embed id='1948044']RELATED: Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler are getting a divorce[/video_embed]While fans may have been shocked at the announcement that Cavallari and Cutler were heading to Splitsville (especially since at the time they had just returned from a seemingly blissful family trip to the Bahamas), the 33-year-old said the decision was actually a long time coming."It didn't happen overnight. We tried really, really hard for years and years. It was the hardest decision I've ever made,” she revealed. “Every relationship has their stuff. I met Jay when I was 23. I was a baby. Jay and I had so much love for each other, but we grew up,” she continued. “When you work at something for so many years and nothing's changing, I think you have to just make a decision. We all want to be happy.”In that vein, Cavallari is pretty relieved that after three seasons, Very Cavallari is also officially done. When the show launched, the reality star was hoping to grow her company, Uncommon James, but her personal life also became the subject of a lot of scrutiny. “I'm just relieved," she said of the show ending. "I just knew I was going to have to talk about everything, and I didn't want to. Thinking about filming was giving me anxiety. My kids are the most important thing to me. What's best for them?” she questioned. "Probably not doing a reality show, having to talk about divorcing their dad.”
As for her relationship with Cutler? Despite things reportedly getting ugly during the separation of assets back in May, the pair seem to be on a better track now. Cavallari is moved into her new Nashville home, she has a new comfort food cookbook coming out on September 29, and she’s focused on being the best mom that she can be to her three kids, sons Camden, 8, and Jaxon, 6, and daughter Saylor, 4.“I still care so much about him and talk to him almost every day. We have three kids together. He's going to be in my life forever,” she continued. "I'm proud for making this decision. It wore at me every single day for years. I feel like my whole world is opening up now because of it, and I'm just feeling the best I've felt in a really long time. I'm really excited about the future all around."[video_embed id='1955082']Before you go: Kristin Cavallari divorced Jay Cutler for being 'unmotivated'[/video_embed]
