Strange thing is—Zooey already knew.

Think back! Waaaaay back to 2008-ish when Katy Perry first started to get a decent amount of radio play for her songs, “I Kissed A Girl,” and “Ur So Gay.” She had long dark hair, bangs, blue eyes, and she dressed a little bit like a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Many people wondered if Katy Perry was actually just the sobriquet of actress and singer Zooey Deschanel. By the time (500) Days of Summer was released in 2009, it was almost impossible to tell the pair apart. Then Katy started wearing blue wigs, cutting her hair, and branching out with her look once she became a household name.

But on Monday, she admitted that she used to leverage the public’s confusion between her and doppelgänger Zooey for her own social currency. In fact, she admitted it right to Zooey’s face (via Instagram Live video chat of course). And that admission came with an apology.

Around the 7 minute mark, Katy and Zooey are chatting about Katy’s latest music video for her single “Not The End of the World,” which stars Zooey, as a nod to all the people who think they look alike. Explaining that she couldn’t star in the video herself because she had just given birth to daughter Daisy with fiancé Orlando Bloom, Katy explains there was a bit more behind the casting choice.

"I have to admit something, Zooey," new-mom Katy said during the chat. "When I came to L.A., I was pretty much a nobody, and you were like just getting so huge at that time — it was like Zooey Deschanel ran the world. Your star was really like out of this world. You have always been everything to me. In that moment, I was so complimented to look like you."

"But I have to admit something to you on a Live -- That when I first got to L.A., I went to the club a LOT," she admitted with a coy smile. "And I wanted to get into the club and I had no money, I had no clout, I had nothing, and sometimes I would pose as you to get into the club."

Shocking behaviour, Ms. Perry! What would the Mother Superior think?!

“Well, I know this!” Zooey replied, much to Katy’s surprise.

“What!!” Katy replied, putting her hands over her mouth in embarrassment.

"People would be like, 'I saw you!'” the New Girl star laughed. "But I'm such a Goody Two-shoes and people kept going, 'I saw you out! I made eye contact with you!' And I was like, 'No!' And then everybody kept telling me about this girl Katy, ‘Katy, who looks just like you,' and I'm like, 'Who is this Katy?' "

She went on, "And then when I met you, I was so relieved because you're so pretty and I was like, 'Oh, thank God. She's so pretty.’ You never know when people say you look like somebody what they're gonna look like and I was like, 'Oh my gosh, she's gorgeous. Like, thank you! Compliment!'"

“I got pretty crunk in the club, I was a wild child,” Katy went on to admit, mortified that she may have given fans the wrong impression of who Zooey really was. “When I first moved to LA, from 17 until about age 23, when "I Kissed a Girl" came out, I was turned up to 11 at the club. Those are my college years. I didn’t go to college.”

"I'm sorry if I misrepresented you; I wanted to say that now.”

"It's a compliment!" the She + Him songstress laughed.

“I also know that some people would call me Faux-y! Which is a Fake-Zooey!”

At least now in the “Not The End of the World” music video, it’s Zooey who is the fake Katy. A Faty!
