It’s been 19 years since Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews became the dream team we didn’t know we needed. The pair starred together in Hathaway’s first feature film role, where the then-unknown actor played Mia Thermopolis, a nerdy high schooler who is thrust into royal life when she finds out she’s actually a princess and travels to Genovia, meeting her grandmother Queen Clarisse (Andrews).Based on Meg Cabot’s book series, the pair reunited again in 2004 for The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, working with director Garry Marshall for a second time. Rumours of a third installment have been discussed for years and the latest development comes from Andrews. She’s in – as long as the script is fit for a queen.Andrews appeared on The Talk @Home on Monday and talked about a possible return to Genovia, revealing that at this point a third film is simply a nice idea. “It’s long been talked about but nothing has sort of been on my desk or anything like that," said Andrews. "I think I would. I’m getting awfully old and crotchety. I’m not sure if it’s the right timing, but I think to work with Annie would be lovely again. And yeah, sure I would be up for it. I think we should wait if the script comes in, just wait for that.”The 84-year-old actor has continued working steadily, starring as Lady Whistledown on the Shonda Rhimes period piece Bridgerton. Andrews is also lending her famous voice to the upcoming Minions film The Rise of Gru, where she stars as Marlena Gru, mom to Gru (Steve Carell). The iconic film star was asked about the possibility of working with Hathaway again during a 2019 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. Andrews again reiterated that she would be happy to reprise her role as Queen Clarisse but was unaware of a finished script.According to Hathaway, the script is ready. Can someone please email it to Julie Andrews? This is a movie we really want to see. Hathaway was also on Watch What Happens Live in 2019 and confirmed author Meg Cabot’s comments that a third script was ready to go. “There is a script. I want to do it, Julie wants to do it. Debra Martin, she’s our producer, she wants to do it,” said Hathaway. “We all really want it to happen, it’s just that we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”Since releasing the first Princess Diaries novel in 2000, author Meg Cabot has written a total of 15 books in the series, meaning there’s definitely enough material for a third film.In addition to Hathaway and Andrews, the Princess Diaries films starred Heather Matarazzo, Hector Elizondo, Mandy Moore and Sandra Oh. The second film cast unknown actor Chris Pine as Nicholas Devereaux, Mia’s romantic interest. We can’t wait to see whose career the third Princess Diaries film launches.[video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Watch Katharine McPhee adorably hijack David Foster's performance[/video_embed]
