Jennifer Lawrence publicly endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris this month, but the Oscar-winner has admitted that voting Democratic is not something she has done in the past. Lawrence appeared on comedian Heather McMahan’s podcast Absolutely Not this week and talked about her political upbringing and why she won’t be voting Republican in November."I grew up Republican. My first time voting, I voted for John McCain. I was a little Republican," Lawrence told McMahan during the October 21 episode. “I was fortunate to grow up in a Republican house where I could see the fiscal benefits of some of the Republican policies and I could also see that the social issues were not in line with my views,” continued Lawrence. The actor said that for her, Trump’s win was a turning point."When Donald Trump got elected, that just changed everything. This is an impeached president who has broken many laws and has refused to condemn white supremacy, and it feels like there has been a line drawn in the sand," said Lawrence told McMahan.Although Lawrence didn’t vote for Obama back in 2008, she says she was a fan of the Democratic president, whose leadership she explained allowed her to "go days, maybe weeks, without thinking about the president because everything would generally be OK.” Memories…

Since the 2016 election, Lawrence has become more politically involved, including her work as a board member on Represent Us. The advocacy group crosses political party lines to bring together conservatives and progressives in an effort to pass anticorruption laws. “It’s an organization that’s working to unrig America’s political system. Basically, we’re trying to put the power back in the hands of the people,” said Lawrence. “So far they’ve passed 114 transformative anti-corruption acts.”In June, Lawrence joined Twitter to help bring awareness to the work being done by Represent Us. The Silver Linings Playbook star shared a video about the criminal justice system in the US, which featured fellow board members Omar Epps and Desmond Meade. On October 8, Lawrence shared a similar sentiment on Ilana Glazer’s YouTube series Cheat Sheet where she spoke about voting for McCain and her decision to cross party lines. “I can’t imagine voting against my own interests as a woman, against my own freedoms for my body.” Lawrence also spoke about voting earlier in the month when she appeared on the cover of V Magazine to publicly endorse Biden and Harris. “Voting is the foundation of our democracy and our freedom. And I would consider this upcoming election the most consequential of our lifetime,” Lawrence told the magazine. “I’m voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris this year because Donald Trump has and will continue to put himself before the safety and well-being of America. He does not represent my values as an American, and most importantly as a human being.”
