When it comes to the transgender community, J.K. Rowling (who is not transgender) has a lot of opinions, and cannot stop sharing them. The Harry Potter scribe has been in the news a lot lately for her controversial and polarizing takes on sex and gender, and over the weekend she once again took to Twitter to post a series of threaded tweets to equate hormonal therapy with the dangerous and debunked practice of conversion therapy.“Many, myself included, believe we are watching a new kind of conversion therapy for young gay people, who are being set on a lifelong path of medicalization that may result in the loss of their fertility and/or full sexual function,” she tweeted.[video_embed id='1973112']RELATED: J.K. Rowling under fire for anti-trans tweets[/video_embed]It all began when user @TrinerScot noticed that Rowling had liked a tweet that called hormone therapy an act of “laziness.” Triner then screencapped her like and added, “Who had money on JK Rowling pivoting to supporting those who call people who take mental health medication ‘lazy’? I take daily medication to function, this sentiment is beyond offensive, it is actively harmful to millions.” Rowling took notice of his critique and immediately responded with a series of tweets. “I've ignored fake tweets attributed to me and RTed widely. I've ignored porn tweeted at children on a thread about their art. I've ignored death and rape threats. I'm not going to ignore this,” began her thread (wait, did she just say she ignored porn directed at children? We have so many questions). The rest of her 11-part thread read, “When you lie about what I believe about mental health medication and when you misrepresent the views of a trans woman for whom I feel nothing but admiration and solidarity, you cross a line.” She described her own struggles with mental health before expressing concern and worry that young people were “being shunted towards hormones and surgery when this may not be in their best interests.” That’s when she compared hormone therapy with conversion therapy. After linking to a series of studies and a BBC documentary on the subject, Rowling ended her thread by saying, “None of that may trouble you or disturb your belief in your own righteousness. But if so, I can’t pretend I care much about your bad opinion of me.”Many people in the LGBTQ+ community and the medical community responded to the Fantastic Beasts author’s thread, including transgender model and activist Munroe Bergdorf, who stated, “J.K. Rowling is not a scientist. She is not a doctor. She is not an expert on gender. She is not a supporter of our community. She is a billionaire, cisgender, heterosexual, white woman who has decided that she knows what is best for us and our bodies. This is not her fight.” Pediatrician Daniel Summers took issue with her stance on medical professional conversations by tweeting that it is “wholly, categorically false” that health professionals worry that hormone therapy is being pushed upon young people. The Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts author has faced backlash recently, even from her own Harry Potter family, with Daniel Radcliffe, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson, and others releasing statements admonishing Rowling for her dangerous views on the transgender community.[video_embed id='1973979']Before you go: Daniel Radcliffe voices support for transgender community[/video_embed]
