Eminem is helping to ensure medical workers in his hometown of Detroit aren’t going hungry during their busy shifts. The rapper is the latest celebrity to donate food to frontline workers who are helping to treat patients suffering from COVID-19 and he’s doing it with a nod to his Oscar-winning track “Lose Yourself.”Earlier this week, Eminem sent containers of precooked pasta and tomato sauce to medical workers at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Labeling the individual meals as ‘Mom’s Spaghetti,’ the food of choice is a carb-loading nod to the lyrics, “His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy / There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti.” That’s probably an accurate representation of how many workers are feeling right now, so well played, Slim Shady. This is the second time Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers III, has paid homage to his famous dish. In 2017, the rapper celebrated the release of his ninth studio album
Revival with a pop-up diner called
Mom’s Spaghetti. Also located in Detroit, the temporary shop sold pasta and merchandise from the album. Eminem surprised fans and viewers in February when he performed “Lose Yourself” at the Academy Awards 17 years after
winning Best Original Song. The rapper’s performance was unannounced and left many audience members
scrambling to process what was happening on stage. It’s still 2020, but the Oscars are catching up on some performance filing work. Eminem famously skipped the 2003 Oscars, assuming he wouldn’t win, leaving his co-writer Jeff Bass to accept the award.
Eminem is the second artist to make a sizeable food donation to the Henry Ford Hospital. In March, fellow Detroit native
Lizzo also sent lunch to the workers of the large inner-city hospital. The hospital’s Twitter page shared a personal message sent by the Grammy winner. “I really hope you guys enjoy the food, we did everything we could to keep it safe for you all, lunch is on me,” says Lizzo in the clip. The Grammy-winning rapper, who recently celebrated
12 years of sobriety, is one of many celebrities helping to ensure that medical workers are being fed during long and stressful shifts in overcrowded hospitals. Actor Jessica Chastain has been
donating Beyond Burgers to the staff the Lennox Hill Hospital in New York and plans on making vegan meals a weekly donation to the medical workers.
Miley Cyrus and Cody Simpson donated 100 meals to medical workers in California, personally delivering tacos that included messages of love and support from the couple.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have also been helping to feed healthcare workers while also supporting local businesses. The couple worked with Fueling the Fearless, an organization that helps deliver meals to medical workers, and donated 100 meals from a Greek restaurant to workers at the East Los Angeles Doctors Hospital. The couple chose a hospital that serves a mainly underprivileged population that is at a heightened risk for contracting the deadly virus. People experiencing homelessness or coming from low income families have been hit
extremely hard by COVID-19 because of insufficient access to hygiene products and an inability to self-isolate and stay home from work.
