On Saturday, the last Saturday Night Live of 2020 aired, and it was a whopper. Hosted by one of the greatest former cast members, Kristen Wiig, it featured Dua Lipa as musical guest and of course Maya Rudolph returned for her always-fire impersonation of VP-elect Senator Kamala Harris. But there was one noticeable absence. Where’s Canadian comedy legend Jim Carrey as POTUS-elect Joe Biden?
News broke only minutes before the show went live to air that Jim Carrey won’t be returning to his jaw-dropping five-episode impersonation of the former VP to President Obama. So when cast member Alex Moffat popped out during the cold open to debut as the Prez-elect, even Beck Bennett (who was playing current VP Mike Pence) had to crack a joke at the switchover. “Joe, you look different somehow!”
Jim Carrey made sure to announce his departure, joking about his “term” coming to an end and noting the hallowed long line of SNL-Biden’s the precede him.
“Though my term was only meant to be 6 weeks,” the Ace Ventura star tweeted, “I was thrilled to be elected as your SNL President...comedy’s highest call of duty. I would love to go forward knowing that Biden was the victor because I nailed that s**t. But I am just one in a long line of proud, fighting SNL Bidens!”
Social media, while sad to see Carrey go, was absolutely LIVING for Alex Moffat’s impersonation.
That wasn’t the only wow moment of the final live SNL of 2020. British songstress Dua Lipa took the stage at Studio 8H twice as the musical guest to perform her radio banger hits, “Don’t Start Now,” and “Levitating.” And did you see the sumptuous, ornate couture she was sporting? For “Levitating” she wore a show-stopping, feathered Valentino hat. It was so big and dazzling, you couldn’t even see where the Titanic hit it! (Kidding!)
Reports say her outfit for that performance was accessorized by Fabergé jewelry as well. For her rendition of “Don’t Start Now,” she sported a vintage Alaïa top, and fam, her entire SNL lewks were setting social media ablaze.
So glad the last SNL of the year went out with a bang. Can’t wait to see what Alec Baldwin the cast has in store for 2021.
