Dakota Johnson is the latest celeb to open her front door—or in her case, three front doors—to the cameras and writers at Architectural Digest. The actor gave viewers an inside look into her warm Los Angeles home, which the
How To Be Single star affectionately calls a "tree house on a boat." Is there a Pinterest board for that?Johnson bought the home on her first day of house hunting in Los Angeles and has been living there for five years. “I was immediately drawn to how it was clean but also cozy,”
she told the mag. “I thought, I’ll never want to sell this place.” Previously owned by
Pose and
American Horror Story producer Ryan Murphy, the home was designed by architect Carl Maston. Johnson said part of the house’s appeal was its backstory. “Maston was buddies with Lautner and Neutra, and they’d all go to Musso & Frank’s together because there was a hostess that they were all in love with. Carl ended up marrying her, and this was the house they lived in.” That sounds like a great idea for a movie. If only there were a producer and actor who could help get it made…Showing off her mix of vintage and new pieces, Johnson starts her tour in the living room, which features a coffee table that she bought with the house. Sharing the home with her dog Zeppelin, Johnson proudly displays her recently alphabetized record collection and her books, including a handful of autographed Patti Smith titles. Johnson’s People’s Choice Award is on display next to her Funko Pop figurine of Barb from
Stranger Things, a character Johnson is still upset remains forgotten in the Upside Down. The actress’ serene backyard includes a pool and trees, as well as a table and chairs made from wood taken from Winston Churchill’s yacht. It’s also the burial place for her cat, Chicken. RIP.
Johnson used her paycheques from the
Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy to buy the house and loves having it as her constant in between life on movie sets. “I thought it would be healthy to have a base,” she says. “And, at the very least, have one place where you know your stuff is, as opposed to 10 places.”Johnson worked on the interior of the home with friends and designers Emily Ward and Louisa Pierce, who are the founders of the Pierce & Ward firm. Johnson had a clear vision for the home and the trio brought the design to life through the use of mood boards. Although Johnson fell in love with original design of the home, it proved impossible to keep every eccentric design element intact. “The upstairs floor was made entirely of cork, which was really cool but wasn’t salvageable,” said Ward.Johnson also opted for redoing the master bathroom after a previous owner installed a urinal. Johnson, who is dating
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, also added two separate vanities to the master bath. “I think the key to a healthy relationship is double sinks,” she said.
