The docu-series Cheer has quickly become must-see TV since it was released in January, showcasing the incredible physical demands of cheerleading by zeroing in on Navarro College and its award-winning cheer team, who—SPOILER ALERT—went on to win their 14th national championship in the show’s first season. Led by tough-love coach Monica Aldama, the team’s incredible athletes were put on display in the gripping drama, but one squad member who was top boy in the hearts of viewers was second-year student Jerry Harris. Going viral with his trademark uplifting "mat talks," Harris was on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night to make sure Hollywood’s A-list were psyched up for the big show. For the uninitiated, mat talk is the practice of team members yelling uplifting messages to their fellow cheer squad members during practice, and Jerry is the undisputed king of the positive chants and one of the many reasons why he became a breakout star of Cheer. Harris and his infectious positivity scored a spot on the red carpet thanks to an invite to the 2020 Oscars from Ellen DeGeneres and he brought that spirit all the way to L.A.[video_embed id='1896033']Mindy Kaling gushes about Canadian stylist Jessica Mulroney[/video_embed]Harris debuted his cheer-inspired look with a video he shared on Twitter, which included a Navarro tie, a red sequined strip running down his pant legs, and of course his championship ring from the team’s 2019 national win in Daytona. Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade both attended Sunday’s Academy Awards and were set on meeting Harris. The former East Compton Clover said that she was excited to mat talk Jerry herself and had already reached out to the joyful young man on social media, adding that she felt like they were basically BFFs. Jerry got some face time on the red carpet with Oscars performer Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, who hyped one another up over their recent wins, including Harris’ cheerleading championship and Eilish’s four Grammys. Eilish also got to try on Harris' National Championship ring, which should be noted looks great with her head-to-toe Chanel. Jerry's undeniable charm easily drew in some of the biggest celebs on the Oscar's red carpet, including Cheer fans Laura Dern, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Kathy Bates, Robin Roberts, and a very excited Greta Gerwig, who revealed she watches the series every night while pumping. Jerry Harris mat talking moms needs to become a thing. There was also the moment when Brad Pitt stopped for Jerry and was informed that he is the coolest person in the world. Brad probably already knew that, but it's still nice to hear.
Harris and Navarro assistant coach Andy Cosferent got the full celebrity treatment on Sunday night, including an invite to the exclusive Vanity Fair Oscar Party. No doubt, Harris spent most of the night spreading positivity and catching anyone who tripped on their train.
