Charlie Hunnam may star in the upcoming film
The Gentlemen, but it took him a beat to realize that recent comments he made while promoting the film were slightly less than
gentlemanly in nature. At least as far as his long-time girlfriend Morgana McNelis is concerned. The former
Sons of Anarchy (and
one-time almost Fifty Shades of Grey) star may have put his foot in his mouth when he sat down with his
Gentlemen co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Hugh Grant on Andy Cohen’s radio show recently,
where he revealed he’s “indifferent” to marriage. In an unsurprising twist, the comments hurt McNelis’ feelings—especially since Hunnam revealed in that same interview how marriage was important to
her. So now the 39-year-old star is backtracking.[video_embed id='1876699']RELATED: Charlie Hunnam is “indifferent" to marrying long-time girlfriend[/video_embed]In an interview that took place at LAX of all places,
Hunnam revealed to TooFab that it was “a stupid thing to say” and he regrets it. “I have to say that really hurt my girlfriend's feelings. I really regretted saying that, cause I actually didn't mean it at all. It was just, frankly, some stupid shit I said in the heat of the moment.”
Hunnam and jewellery designer McNelis have been together for more than a decade, which makes marriage a legit conversation in their household. It’s also something Hunnam says is very much on the table because he is a romantic; he just doesn’t love the institution part of it.“I'm like so romantic! The reality is I sort of consider myself married,” he went on. “I've been with my girlfriend for 14 years... I suppose what I was trying to articulate was that the official government sanctioning of it doesn't mean anything to me; but the romance of it means an enormous amount. I really regret saying that.”
So why did Hunnam say it in the first place? He blames a string of interviews for three-days straight, along with the loose atmosphere of the Cohen interview in which all of the guys were just “bantering.”“Listen, you spend 12 hours a day for three days doing interviews straight, you're gonna say some stupid shit. Especially a guy like me that's not that smart,” Hunnam added. “It's like being with your pals, sometimes not thinking like... you're not trying to articulate your sincere opinion about something; and then you see it in black and white.”So does that mean marriage is in the future for Hunnam, who tied the knot once before to actress Katharine Towne at the age of 18 for what
he has described as “three terrible, painful, expensive years”?“Watch this space,” he told TooFab. “Family is very important to me. I was always a late bloomer. I’ve left it for a long time. Everything is great and we were just pursuing other interests in our lives but we’re certainly coming up to that time where we’ve got to start switching it up.”The fans are definitely watching, Charlie.[video_embed id='-1']Before you go: Watch this guy demonstrate how intense the Newfoundland blizzard is[/video_embed]
