The Golden Globes are back and revamped after scraping the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and the nominations are turning heads.

Unsurprisingly, the Barbenheimer zeitgeist continues unabated here, with both Barbie and Oppenheimer leading the movie nomination pack with nine for Greta Gerwig’s vehicle and eight for the atomic bomb drama.

They are followed closely by Martin Scorsese’s 3+ hour epic Killers of the Flower Moon with seven nods, Poor Things with an equal seven, and Past Lives with five.

On the television side, Succession scored nine nods. Only Murders in the Building and The Bear scored five nods each, including for Best TV Series. The Crown got four, Ted Lasso got three, and Barry got two. For Best Limited Series, Beef scored three.

The performers nominated in both movies and TV are a who’s who, and of course, Barbenheimer strikes again! In their respective, gendered categories, Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy got Best Performance nods. Other nominated performers include Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Timothee Chalamet, Joaquin Phoenix, Jodie Foster, Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Annette Bening, and Meryl Streep.

In fact, Meryl has broken the record she set herself as the most nominated actor in the history of the Golden Globes, per The Hollywood Reporter. She’s nominated for her guest-starring appearance this year in Only Murders in the Building.

There are also a few Canadians in the mix, with both Ryan Gosling and Martin Short receiving nods for “Barbie” and Only Murders in the Building.

There are some obvious snubs as well. Strangely, The Color Purple didn’t get a nod for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and the rebooted Frasier got zilch in the TV category.

You may notice a change to the categories this year, with each category hosting six nominations rather than five which was previously the rule. There are also a few new categories, including Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement for movies that grossed over $150 million USD.

The 2024 Golden Globes will air on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m., however, a host has yet to be announced. Please for the love of all things divine and holy, let it be Tina Fey and Amy Poehler!
