The most successful movie franchise to ever come out of a theme park ride, Pirates of the Caribbean, is rumoured to be returning to a theatre (or VOD platform) near you — but the five-film series will probably re-emerge without it’s biggest star. Johnny Depp’s swashbuckling Keith Richards caricature will reportedly be sitting this one out. Instead, Disney will go the route of a reboot, setting a new star at the centre of the saga. Word is that the studio is considering a female lead. The DisInsider reports that Avengers and Jumanji star Karen Gillan is the name at the top of Disney’s list. Sci-fi fans will also know Gillan from her career-making role as Amy Pond in Doctor Who, a series in which her character’s travels through time and space actually required her to dress up as a pirate for an episode called ‘The Curse of the Black Spot.’ See below for evidence that the woman knows how to rock a tricorn and brandish a sword.[caption id="attachment_4921113" align="alignleft" width="1024"] BBC[/caption][video_embed id='-1']RELATED: 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' theme song covered with 4 trombone mulit-track[/video_embed]Disney has been mulling over a reimagining of the Pirates franchise for years, DisInsider says, pointing to a 2018 Hollywood Reporter piece in which studio president Sean Bailey told the magazine, “We want to bring in a new energy and vitality. I love the [Pirates] movies but…  we want to give it a kick in the pants.”The studio already has Pirates mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer on board for the reboot and is aiming to pull in the writing team behind the original movies for the franchise’s new addition. The question is: Will Johnny Depp make at least a cameo appearance as Captain Jack Sparrow? Naturally, the promise of seeing Sparrow one last time could lure some fans to take in the new flick, but Depp’s own personal drama has been scaring off Hollywood types since the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Disney might hesitate to bring him back into the fold. Perhaps Depp will simply continue to make his own movies.
