Since her 13-year conservatorship and her marriage to Sam Asghari ended, there has been much speculation that pop princess Britney Spears would release a memoir, detailing her troubled childhood, her meteoric rise to fame, her public romances, and her struggles with happiness.
Then, in a now-deleted Instagram post, the "...Baby One More Time" singer confirmed the memoir was happening, writing, "Well, I'm writing a book at the moment and as it's actually healing and therapeutic... it's also hard bringing up past events in my life... I've never been able to express openly,” via E! News.
Now, we know “The Woman In Me” will be released October 24, and it’s already smashed Prince Harry’s record for the fastest-selling preorders. Here’s all the revelations we’ve gleaned so far from the much-anticipated memoir, and the “Stronger” singer definitely clarifies and clears up a lot of speculation about her life, her loves, and her losses.
Probably the most devastating passage revealed from the memoir includes the “Everytime” singer revealing she became pregnant while dating “Like I Love You” singer Justin Timberlake, but he convinced her to terminate the pregnancy.
According to People, Britney writes, "It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn't a tragedy. I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I'd anticipated."
It's unclear when this pregnancy occurred in their relationship, but according to her, Justin was upset about it. She writes, "But Justin definitely wasn't happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren't ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young."
"If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn't want to be a father."
For years, people speculated that Britney stepped out on Justin, hooking up with choreographer Wade Robson. In her 2023 memoir, she confirms it, but there’s more to the story.
"We were out one night and we went to a Spanish bar. We danced and danced. I made out with him that night," she wrote in the book, according to The U.S. Sun. This was the first time that she’s ever confirmed cheating, however she also posited that it wasn't exactly the end of their relationship. She writes she told Justin what happened and the two stuck things out until they eventually broke up in 2002. But she wasn’t the only guilty party
In "The Woman in Me," she writes that Justin also cheated on her while they were together. She didn't name the person who he cheated with, but she does know who and said it was "another celebrity," per TMZ. Britney chose to keep the details private because that person has moved on and has a family, and she’s clarified that she didn't want to cause any unnecessary issues.
Describing her connection with Justin as magnetic, she reveals in the book that he broke up with her via text message, a move that left her “devastated.”
When Justin released the “Cry Me a River” music video, featuring “a woman who looks like me cheats on him and he wanders around sad in the rain, ” she writes she was then seen by the public as a “harlot who’d broken the heart of America’s golden boy.”
“I was comatose in Louisiana, and he was happily running around Hollywood,” she clarifies.
After her relationship with Justin ended, the “Womanizer” singer recounts her brief fling with “In Bruges” star Colin Farrell, saying they were set up through a “club promoter friend.”
Describing their relationship as a “two-week brawl,” she continues, “Brawl is the only word for it—we were all over each other, grappling so passionately it was like we were in a street fight,” she writes, per Time. The paparazzi were all over the two when they walked the red carpet together in 2003 for the premiere of Colin’s movie “The Recruit” and that was when she realized she had unresolved feelings for Justin lingering.
“As I had before when I’d felt too attached to a man, I tried to convince myself in every way that it was not a big deal, that we were just having fun, that in this case, I was vulnerable because I wasn’t over Justin yet,” she writes, adding, “for a brief moment in time, I did think there could be something there. The disappointments in my romantic life were just one part of how isolated I became. I felt so awkward all the time.”
Britney writes that she felt forced by her father Jamie Spears and her management team to participate in an interview with Diane Sawyer, during which Sawyer pressed her on what she did to JUstin that caused him “so much pain.” Britney famously breaks down crying during the interview, while Sawyer continues to probe, and the interview has not aged well.
Britney writesthat interview as a “breaking point” for her.
“I felt like I had been exploited,” she writes, “set up in front of the whole world.”
“It was completely humiliating,” she continues, “I wasn’t told what the questions would be ahead of time, and it turned out they were 100 percent embarrassing. I was too vulnerable then, too sensitive, to do this type of interview.”
