Ahh the generation wars. Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, and the up-and-coming Gen Alpha are all seemingly in a battle for dominance and relevance, and that is playing out in Hollywood. Nowhere is that more apparent than behind the scenes of the Madame Web superhero movie, where star Dakota Johnson is sharing the silver screen with Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor and Isabela Merced.
According to Dakota, the latter three, all of whom are Gen Z, are in a group chat called “The Boo Crew,” and Dakota has not entered the chat.
"I don't think they include me," Dakota told E! News. "I'm older than them, and they make sure that I'm aware of that."
This isn’t the first time the 50 Shades of Grey star has mentioned how palpable the generational divide is between her and the rest of the cast. On February 8, during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, she admitted about her Gen Z co-stars, “I love them. And they annoy me.”
Saying she felt her age around them “all the time, like every second of the day,” she also tempered that by reminding people that she’s not that much older than the cast. Dakota is 34, while Sydney is 26, Celeste is 25, and Isabel is 22.
For their part, the Gen Z cast did admit previously that they do indeed have that group chat, but they didn’t confirm or deny whether Dakota has been excluded from it. They did however shower praise upon their elder.
"She really is like a big sister,” Isabel said of Dakota.
“It was genuinely so refreshing to have that kind of leadership,” Celeste gushed.
"I've been a fan of hers since I was a lot younger," Sydney admitted.
Ladies, she’s 34, not 94!
Madame Web hits the cinemas on Valentine’s Day, February 14.
