Popstar Miley Cyrus is sharing her music reflections in a new TikTok series tied to her new single “Used To Be Young,” and in her latest installment, she reflected on how her relationship to music and to accepting the love and adoration from fans is vastly different to that of her father, country legend Billy Ray Cyrus.
“When I was born, my dad had the No. 1 country song,” she said, referring to 1992’s “Achy Breaky Heart.”
She continued, “When I see the numbers, I just see the humans behind it, enjoying the music.I just see people in numbers.”
In the emotional TikTok, the “Flowers” singer choked up as she talked about their differences. “My dad grew up the opposite of me, so I think that’s where me and my dad’s relationship to fame and success is wildly different,” she revealed.
“Him feeling loved by a big audience impacted him emotionally more than it ever could me. When he feels special or important it’s like healing a childhood wound and I’ve always been made to feel like a star. It makes me emotional.”
Wiping away tears, she then admits that revelation “got” to her.
She then gushes about her father’s musical talent and admits that she cherishes her early memories with him. "I do have a lot of great memories singing music with my dad and learning and watching his voice and the way that he’s using the instrument," she said before adding, "I will say that I feel vocally my dad was underappreciated."
Amid Billy Ray’s recent divorce from Tish Cyrus in April 2022, the relationship between Miley and Billy Ray has been strained. After filing for divorce three times before it finally stuck, the Cyrus family has been splintered by the separation between Tish and Billy Ray. "It's been a lot, but everyone knew that it was time for a change," Billy Ray Cyrus told People, who later announced his engagement to rising star Firerose just a few months after his split with Tish, and it reportedly caused a rift in the family.
"Miley has been closer to her mom Tish throughout the divorce," an inside source told E! News. "The divorce between her parents [has] put a strain on her relationship with her dad and it's been hard to connect with him in the last year."
But, while the insider shared Miley Cyrus' hope to soon reconnect with her dad, that may not be on the cards. The Sun reported that the once-close father and daughter argued about how Billy Ray behaved at the end of his marriage to Tish. After this, they stopped speaking and unfollowed each other on Instagram.
In the divorce filings from April 2022, Tish filed a restraining order that prohibited the parents from using derogatory language in front of their family, tormenting each other, or hiding and moving any marital belongings — suggesting they may not be on the best of terms.
Still the ex-couple and co-parents have tried to put a positive spin on things in the media. "We will always be family and look forward to a continued and loving shared experience as friends and parents.,” they said in a statement. "We have not come to this decision lightly or quickly," seemingly to clarify that this has probably been a long time coming and won't be called off like before.
