Drew Barrymore was thrust into the public spotlight when she was still a toddler with her star-making turn in Steven Spielberg’s iconic “ET.” While still a child, her mother, Jaid Barrymore, would take her to the legendary Studio 54, which we all can agree is not an environment for a kid.

Growing up in the media spotlight was difficult for Drew, and she went from child star to teen sex symbol, and she struggled with addiction from a young age. The Never Been Kissed star is one of the few child stars able to turn their life around make it as an adult star, with hits under her belt like Charlie’s Angels and Scream.

However, now the talk show host is coming for the tabloids whom she says have been messing with her since she was 13. Drew is furious her words about her mother Jaid, whom she’s been legally emancipated from since the age of 14, were construed by the tabloids to suggest she wanted her mother dead.

“You know what, to all you tabloids out there, you have been f**king with my life since I was 13-years-old,” she began in a video posted to her official Instagram. “I have never said that I wished my mother was dead. How dare you put those words in my mouth.”

The Ever After star is referring to an interview she gave with New York Magazine where she said she was jealous of her friends who can now begin to heal from their turbulent relationships with their mothers after their mothers have passed on. “All their moms are gone, and my mom’s not. And I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t have that luxury.’ But I cannot wait.”

That turned into tabloids like Page Six running with the headline, “Drew Barrymore admits she wishes her mother Jaid was dead: ‘I cannot wait’.”

“I have been vulnerable and tried to figure out a very difficult, painful relationship while admitting it is difficult to do while a parent is alive,” Drew said in her Instagram video. “And, for those of us who have to figure that out in real time cannot wait, as in they cannot wait for the time, not that the parent is dead.”

“Don’t twist my words around or ever say that I wish my mother was dead. I have never said that. I never would,” she continued. “In fact, I go on to say that I wish I never have to live an existence where I would wish that on someone because that is sick.”

In the New York Magazine interview, Drew does clarify her comment, saying, “I don’t want to live in a state where I wish someone to be gone sooner than they’re meant to be so I can grow. I actually want her to be happy and thrive and be healthy,” she said. “But I have to f***ing grow in spite of her being on this planet.”

“I dared to say it, and I didn’t feel good,” she reflected in the interview of the comment. “I do care. I’ll never not care. I don’t know if I’ve ever known how to fully guard, close off, not feel, build the wall up.”

Drew has previously spoken about the dangers her Momager subjected her to. "I think she created a monster, and she didn't know what to do with the monster," Drew admitted on "The Howard Stern Show."

In fact, due to Drew’s spiraling condition with drugs and alcohol at a young age, Jaid threw her daughter into a psychiatric ward for a year, and the singer David Crosby took in Drew for a while after she was released at 14. Since legal emancipation at 14, her relationship has been touch and go with Jaid, with Drew still financially supporting her mother but contact is not consistent.

"I feel goodness toward my mom. I feel empathy and understanding," Drew told Howard Stern, explaining that Jaid has met her daughters but that she ensures "there's real boundaries and distance and a lot of respect" involved.

Drew admitted that she doesn't blame her mom for placing her in an institution. "I really was out of control, and I forgive her for making this choice. She probably felt she had nowhere to turn," she said.
