It’s hard not to be enthralled by the tumultuous and acrimonious breakup of global singing sensation Shakira and football star Gerard Piqué. The two, who have been together for 11 years, and living together in Barcelona for 9, share two kids Milan and Sasha. But their power-couple romance ended last summer when the former footie king was caught having an affair with the woman he is now publicly dating, Clara Chía.
Shakira wrote a break-up diss track to help her deal, “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” and it went viral, but now their split is going to another level: the “Hips Don’t Lie” songstress put her money where her mouth is, packed up her kids, and left Barcelona for good.
Presumably relocating to Miami where her maternal family lives, she wrote a lengthy and heartfelt goodbye to Barcelona on her official Instagram. “I settled in Barcelona to give my children a stability, the same we are now looking for in another corner of the world next to family, friends and the sea,” she began her post from yesterday.
“Today we start a new chapter in the pursuit of their happiness.”
She then goes on to thank her family, friends, and fans in the Spanish hub, hinting that she has more faith in them than romantic love, writing, “Thank you to everyone who surfed alongside me so many waves there in Barcelona, the city where I learned that friendship is certainly longer than love.”
“Thank you to everyone who has been there to cheer me up, dried my tears, inspired me and made me grow,” she wrapped up her caption. “Thank you to my Spanish audience who have always wrapped me in their love and loyalty. For you just a see you later and as my father said so many times, see you around the curves!”
Back in November, the “Wherever, Whenever” singer and the soccer champ were ironing out the custody agreement when the news of the move became public. Our sole objective is to provide our children with the utmost security and protection," the former couple shared in a joint statement to E! News, "and hope that they can continue with their lives in a safe and calm environment."
Speaking with Elle, the “Underneath Your Clothes” singer revealed last year that she was finding the breakup difficult and like a bad dream, unable to process that this was her life now.
"I've remained quiet and just tried to process it all," she told the outlet. "It's hard to talk about it, especially because I'm still going through it, and because I'm in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation. And so it's been tough not only for me, but also for my kids. Incredibly difficult."
"I have paparazzi camping outside, in front of my house, 24/7," she continued. "And there's not a place where I can hide from them with my kids, except for my own house. You know, we can't take a walk in the park like a regular family or go have an ice cream or do any activity without paparazzi following us. So it's hard."
"Sometimes I just feel like this is all a bad dream and that I'm going to wake up at some point," she candidly revealed. "But no, it's real."
Since then, it seems Shakira has found her strength again, because her collab with Bizarrap for “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” where she dissed Piqué, has become a viral hit. One of the lyrics from the song has become an anthem for women’s empowerment. She sings, “Las mujeres ya no lloran, las mujeres facturan,” which translates to, “Women don’t cry anymore, they cash in.”
At one point, she even directly calls out her ex’s new woman in the song, by saying, “Her name sounds like a nice person’s name/ Clara clearly isn’t what it sounds like.” Clara means “clear” in Spanish.
Since performing the song on The Tonight Show, where legions of fans sang along with the “She Wolf” crooner, the song has gone viral with over 14 million views on YouTube.
