Iconic singer and trend-setter for 50 years, Cher, has always been known to voice her opinion and clap back when it’s needed - whether she’s calling David Letterman an “a**hole” live on air to his face during his show, or whether she’s literally tweeting at us with side-eye (we love you Cher!!), the woman can’t stop/won’t stop, and we don’t want her to.
That’s why her recent revelation about her heartbreaking experiences with pregnancy loss amid the US SCOTUS Roe v Wade decision just hits different.
Late last night, the “Turn Back Time” crooner and Oscar-winning actress took to Twitter to reveal that when she was 18 years old and married to Sonny Bono, she suffered a devastating miscarriage, which ended up being her first of three.
“When I was young I had 3 miscarriages,” she began in her quintessential tweeting style. “1st at 18.I was alone in our house.son came home & I was sobbing,& rocking on our floor.”
She continued, “when I got 2 dr I was screaming in pain.couldn’t even stop in elevator.dr sent me straight 2 hospital,& in2 operating rm.WHAT WOULD HAPPEN 2 ME TODAY.”
It’s a powerful story that makes her performance in the 1996 HBO series If These Walls Could Talk about the struggles of women in pre-Roe America even more poignant. That performance was brought to Cher’s attention in her mentions, and she replied that she feels, now more than ever, that the series should be shown on a loop.
Converting to All Caps, the “Believe” singer screamed into the ether, “THEY SHOULD BE SHOWING THAT MOVIE ON A LOOP‼️WTF IS WRONG WITH HBO⁉️THIS COVERS ABORTION IN A WAY WOMEN CAN REALLY FEEL.MAYBE HEAD OF HBO ISNT INTERESTED IN WOMENS PAIN & SUFFERING”
After her three pregnancy losses, we know that Cher went on to have two healthy children, first Chaz Bono with Sonny Bono, and later Elijah Blue Allman with her second husband Gregg Allman.
She also sent out a series of other tweets on topic well into the evening. Another tweet, replying to the Occupy Democrats twitter account, read, in part, “WOMEN ARE SUFFERING & WILL EITHER BLEED OUT,WHILE DRS LOOK ON,OR BE SENT HOME TILL THEIR COMPLICATIONS ARE BRINGING THEM CLOSE TO⚰️”
The “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” singer then added in another tweet a grave warning if the Republican party of the US takes control of the US Congress, which is currently in a Democrat majority.
“IF SENATE & CONGRESS GO TO REPUBLICANS….THERE WILL BE NO ABORTIONS, OR PRENATAL CARE IN🇺🇸. WOMEN WILL BLEED OUT, & DIE, WHILE SOME GROUP OF OLD WHITE REPUBLICAN” MEN” DECIDE WHAT MEDICAL TREATMENT U DESERVE,” she tweeted.
Her thread of tweets continues below.
Other celebrities who have used social media to express their anger at the SCOTUS decision include Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, and Jessica Chastain, while the abortion experiences of celebs like the late Debbie Reynolds and Brigitte Bardot have gone viral online.
