“Kiss Me More” singer Doja Cat has just revealed she suffered a major health scare this week after winning four awards at the Billboard Music Awards last weekend. According to her, she was feeling unwell before the BBMAs, but she didn’t follow her doctor’s orders to the letter, and thus, there might be serious consequences for her singing career.
Taking to Twitter on May 19, she tweeted that she had surgery on her tonsils to drain an abscess. “dr. just had to cut into my left tonsil. i had an abscess in it. my whole throat is f***ed,” she revealed before adding a note to fans hoping for new music, writing, “so i might have some bad news for yall coming soon.”

She continued explaining that she was on antibiotics before the BBMAs, but she didn’t heed her doctor’s advice to stay away from alcohol and her vape pen, and as a result, her tonsils took a turn for the worse. She says she developed “a nasty a** growth” on her tonsils, resulting in the emergency surgery Thursday.
nah so my tonsils got infected before bbmas and i was taking fuckin antibiotics but forgot that i was taking them and then i drank wine and was vaping all day long and then i started getting a nasty ass growth on my tonsil so they had to do surgery on it today.

The “Streets” crooner then went into detail about the medical procedure (she gets pretty gory, it’s not for the faint of heart!), and added that the pain was so much, she cried.
he poked up in dere with a needle twice and then sucked all the juice out and then he took a sharp thing and cut it in two places and squoze all the goop out in dere. i cried and it hurt a lot but im ok.

Responding to a fan, she confirmed that will probably have to have her tonsils removed soon, and is also on a vape-hiatus (although she admitted she’s worried about cravings. She assured fans that she knows she can’t hit the vape because of all the “poisonous s**t” that could seep into her open wound and make things worse. “I’m hella young” she added.
then its like imagine all that wierd poisonous shit in the vape seeping into the completely open wound in my throat like fuck that. im hella young. https://t.co/iRmT3NPrNt

But of course, Doja being Doja, she also had a high dose of sass for any fans who blew up her mentions, trying to shame her for the vape addiction. “so foh with that ‘THROW IT AWAY THEN QUEEN’ s**t,” she wrote. “that doesn't help anybody and it just sounds condescending to anybody whos actually struggling w nicotine addiction.”
She added, “ive tried all that throw it away s**t before. doesn't work.”

But she also had words of gratitude for those who were showing up for her, thanking her fans for being so supportive, she could cry (again).
The “Best Friend” rapper is the most recent celeb to undergo career-threatening throat surgery. Back in 2012, Adele underwent vocal chord surgery that prevented her from talking at all while she healed. The Sound of Music legend Julie Andrews underwent vocal cord surgery in 1997 that she says destroyed her singing voice permanently. In 1987, Elton John underwent vocal surgery that permanently lowered his singing range.
What this means for Doja Cat at this point is unclear, despite her “might have some bad news for yall coming soon” warning, which comes just a couple months after she threatened to quit the music industry altogether. After being unable to perform at her scheduled tour stop in Paraguay due to a storm and floods (which also forced Miley Cyrus’s plane to make an emergency landing after being struck by lightning), she was accosted on Twitter by fans who accused her of not caring for their welfare. She announced she was leaving the music industry as a result, tweeting, “This s**t ain’t for me so I’m out. Y’all take care.”
