The Donda publicity train continues, although fans still have no idea when Kanye West (or should we start calling him just Ye?) will actually drop his new album. Until then, he’s entertaining us all with listening events and controversial guest star appearances, which now include Kim Kardashian in a wedding dress.
Kardashian has been at both of West’s prior listening parties this summer to show her support, but at the third event on Thursday night she draped herself in a Balenciaga couture wedding gown to be there for her ex, helping him to recreate their wedding. The entire thing was live-streamed on Apple Music.
According to TMZ, it was indeed a veiled Kardashian who stepped onstage in the dress during the final song, “No Child Left Behind.” The publication reports that their sources “with direct knowledge” say the couple is not back together at all, and that this is just Kim being there for her ex-husband because they will always be family.
Kim herself hasn’t shared any updates on her social media pages at time of press, but Khloe Kardashian seemed to confirm her sister’s identity when she shared video of the “wedding” from the live stream on her Instagram Story. "Damn…… I've never seen anything this sick!!!!!" she said on Twitter. Later she added, “insanely beautiful.”
It was definitely a different vibe than the performer’s last event, in which he did push-ups onstage and wrapped the entire thing by being harness-lifted to the ceiling of the arena as the lights snapped off.
The third Donda event switched venues from Atlanta to West’s hometown of Chicago. There, at Soldier Field, West set up a replica of his childhood home with a cross on top, which is pretty much on brand for him considering Donda is named after and dedicated to his late mother. Donda West died in November 2007 after complications from plastic surgery.
West also had a big screen set up to share bible verses and there were candles everywhere. At one point, Marilyn Manson, who is facing multiple lawsuits for sexual assault, randomly appeared, as did DaBaby, who is facing his own controversy following homophobic comments he made onstage in Miami in July.
Some eagle-eared fans noticed that album contributions from Jay-Z and Kid Cudi, which were heard during the previous listening parties, weren’t included this time around. DaBaby seemed to have replaced Jay-Z on his track, at least for the event.
A total of 38,000 fans were allowed admittance to the show (none of whom had to show proof of COVID vaccination), with prices ranging from $150 to $300US a ticket. He did, however, partner with the Chicago Department of Public Health to offer 1,500 vaccinations to people who wanted them at the event.
It’s unclear how many tickets were actually sold (the July 22 event in Atlanta pulled in 42,000 fans), but it is pretty obvious that West is making millions off of these listening parties.
Knowing that, no one should be surprised that following this latest event, Donda (which was originally scheduled for a July 2020 release), still hasn’t dropped. That could be because the rumours are true and West is looking for a release-date battle with his recently reignited rival, Drake, and his own release of Certified Lover Boy.
It’s not like West hasn’t done something similar in the past: back in 2007 he had a standoff with 50 Cent in which they both dropped their respective third albums, Graduation and Curtis.
It was just revealed Friday on ESPN's Sports Center that Drake has his eyes on a September 3 release date so we don't have long to wait to see.
