Britney Spears' dad, Jamie Spears, has agreed to step down from the pop star's conservatorship.
Spears' father filed his response to his daughter's petition for his suspension on Thursday with the Los Angeles Superior Court. His filing announced his decision to step down.
Jamie's lawyers believe that there are no actual grounds for suspending or removing him from the conservatorship.
“There are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr. Spears as the Conservator of the Estate under Probate Code section 2650. And it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests,” the court doc states, according to Variety.
“Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests,” the filing continues. “So even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator. As the Court has likely surmised, before Ms. Spears’ new attorney arrived, Mr. Spears had already been working on such a transition with Ms. Spears’ former court-appointed counsel, Sam Ingham.”
In a statement to the outlet, Britney's lawyer Mathew Rosengart called Jamie stepping down a vindication for the pop star.
“We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed. It is vindication for Britney. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others,” Rosengart’s statement read. “We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears’s sworn deposition in the near future.”
“In the interim, rather than making false accusations and taking cheap shots at his own daughter, Mr. Spears should remain silent and step aside immediately," Rosengart added.
Spears' father removing himself from the conservatorship comes after a very long, public battle regarding the state of the conservatorship.
Britney addressed the court directly during her conservatorship case's probate hearing in Los Angeles on June 23 and said that her father "loved the control" he had over her with the "abusive" conservatorship.
She said that her father “loved the control he had over me, one hundred thousand percent.”
“I am not happy, I can’t sleep. I’m so angry, it’s insane. And I’m depressed,” the 39-year-old singer continued. “My dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship, including my management … they should be in jail.”
Her dad had claimed that he wasn't the one who was making her life miserable and placed all the blame on Jodi Montgomery.
Jamie put any blame for the restrictive rules his daughter is under on the current personal conservator, Jodi Montgomery. He also said that when Britney's lawyer filed documents to appoint Montgomery, his daughter didn't have the mental capacity to make decisions about her medical treatment and it was all left up to Montgomery.
In another tearful testimony on July 14, Britney revealed that she wanted to charge her father for the way she's been treated. “I would like to charge my father with conservatorship abuse,” she said by phone. “I want to press charges against my father today. I want an investigation into my dad.”
Jamie had been his daughter's co-conservator since 2008 and became the sole conservator in 2019 after Andrew Wallet resigned from co-conservatorship.
