Back in January, actress and director Olivia Wilde sparked dating rumours with international pop superstar Harry Styles when they were spotted together holding hands. This set off a media frenzy because her split from ex-fiancé, Ted Lasso star and SNL alum Jason Sudeikis had, like, *just* happened. We couldn’t help but wonder if there was some overlap there.
Now Sudeikis is setting the record straight in a new interview published in the August issue of GQ.
Clarifying that they broke up in November of 2020, right around the time the first details from the Don’t Worry Darling set (which Olivia is directing and Harry is the star), and that they no longer share a house, he said of the cause of the split, “I’ll have a better understanding of why in a year, and an even better one in two, and an even greater one in five, and it’ll go from being, you know, a book of my life to becoming a chapter to a paragraph to a line to a word to a doodle.”
He wouldn’t tell GQ exactly what went down between the two of them, but he did say, “That’s an experience that you either learn from or make excuses about. You take some responsibility for it, hold yourself accountable for what you do, but then also endeavor to learn something beyond the obvious from it.”
At one point, speaking on Ted Lasso, the interviewer mentions that while it's not uncommon for artists to take IRL inspiration for their work, it rarely happens the other way around. The show ends its first season with the title character getting a divorce after some marital strife.
“I wonder if that's true," the actor responds. "I mean, isn't that just a little bit of what Oprah was telling us for years and years? You know, manifestation? Power of thought? That's The Secret in reverse, you know?”
When asked if a breakup was actually a thing he wanted to manifest, Sudeikis clarifies: “No. No. But, again, it isn't that. It wasn't that. And again, that's just me knowing the details of it. Like, that's just me knowing where it comes from, where any of it comes from.”
Earlier this year, Jason raised a few eyebrows when he wore a tie-dye hoodie to accept the award for Best Actor in a Comedy at the Golden Globes. He’d be forgiven easily for that fashion faux-pas were he truly heartbroken. Who doesn’t wear sweats (and listen to Carly Simon while eating ice cream) during a breakup?! Don’t worry though; he says he doesn’t need an intervention.
“I was neither high nor heartbroken,” he explained. “So yeah, it came off like, ‘This is how I feel. I believe in moving forward.'”
“I wore that hoodie because I didn’t wanna f**king wear the f**king top half of a Tom Ford suit. I love Tom Ford suits, but it felt weird as s**t.”
Jason and Olivia were together for 10 years, and have two kids together 7-year-old Otis and 4-year-old Daisy, but it looks like they’re still friendly and can co-parent together like superheroes. After Jason sported that GG hoodie, Olivia made sure to take to Twitter to praise her former fiancé.
“Congrats to Jason and the entire Ted Lasso family on your @CriticsChoice wins!" she wrote. "So happy for you guys. I hope this means we all keep wearing hoodies when the ceremonies are in person next year."
Conversely, when Jason accepted the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series at the Critic’s Choice Awards this year, he thanked Olivia in his speech.
“I want to thank my kids, Otis and Daisy," he said. "I want to thank their mom Olivia, who had the initial idea to do this as a TV show, saying, 'You and Brendan [Hunt] and Joe [Kelly] like doing that so much, you should do it as a movie or TV show' ... She was right."
Jason has since gone public with his relationship with Keeley Hazell, his co-star on Ted Lasso, which seems to be a nice result after a year of personal pitfalls.
“I think if you have the opportunity to hit rock bottom, however you define that, you can become 412 bones or land like an Avenger,” he said. “I personally have chosen to land like an Avenger.”
