Andie McDowell’s curls have always mesmerized us, but now the 63-year-old L’Oréal Paris ambassador is taking the 2021 Cannes Film Festival red carpets by storm, showing off her salt-and-pepper-coloured locks.
After growing out her greys during the pandemic, MacDowell is now fully embracing the natural look and she told People that it's simply because, well, she likes herself!
“Because of the silver, it gets even a little drier. The texture becomes even more wiry, but I’m embracing all of it,” she told the outlet. “I'm comfortable. I like me. That's where you get to by the time you're my age."
When it comes to those gorgeous curls, MacDowell isn’t trying to keep them tamed.
“I'm not worried about keeping it under control," MacDowell said. "We've emphasized the wildness. We've gone with that," she added.
The secret to maintaining volume? Conditioner. The actress said that sometimes she just puts conditioner in her hair and leaves it there.
"I just put conditioner in and leave it in there. If I'm not working, that's all I do. I just sleep in it sometimes," said the star.
The Four Weddings and a Funeral actress said that she taught her daughters, Margaret, 26, and Rainey Qualley, 31, to love themselves, and in return, they are teaching her the same thing.
"They remind me quite often not to say anything derogatory about myself," MacDowell said. "They're actually better than I am in a lot of ways because I taught them well. They listened."
This isn’t the first time MacDowell has opened up about embracing her grey hair.
In February, MacDowell joined Drewy Barrymore and Ross Mathews on The Drew Barrymore Show to talk all things quarantine beauty.
While many people decided to try to DIY their own hair during the beginning of the pandemic, MacDowell wasn’t bothered.
"I wasn't colouring my hair and you could see my roots, and my daughters [Rainey and Margaret Qualley] kept telling me that I looked badass. And that idea that I could look badass appealed to me," MacDowell said on the episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. "So I went for it, and I'm loving it."
The Groundhog Day actress said that she has to correct people on the actual colour of her hair.
“It’s not grey, it’s silver,” she stated.
"It's not that I'm letting myself go, I don't think of it that way,” she said of why she’s embracing the silver locks.
She went on to explain what she meant by telling a story about a grocery store run-in she had when she first went silver.
"When I first did it I went to the grocery store because we had no place to go and I thought I looked good, and I saw a man there — a 'silver fox' guy. A guy you see and go 'he's a silver fox.' And I immediately just put my shoulders back, and I was like, 'and so am I.' We kind of shot a look at each other and I was like, 'I'm a silver fox.'"
Back in February MacDowell admitted that she didn’t know if she’d stick with the silver hue forever, saying” "I don't know what's going to happen in five years, I may colour my hair again. But I'm enjoying it right now."
About six months later and the star is still rocking that silver look on the red carpet at Cannes with other actresses like Helen Mirren, who's been sporting a silver-white top knot, and Jodie Foster, who is showing off some grey strands around her face.
We love to see it!
